I loved listening to the Alice Isn't Dead podcast. It's from one of the writers of Welcome to Nightvale.

https://www.nightvalepresents.com/aliceisntdead

I recently took my free Audible trial and decided to listen to the of the novel.

https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Alice-Isnt-Dead-Audiobook/0008323739

I've really enjoyed it. It's a reimagining of the story.

"Richest 1% account for more carbon emissions than poorest 66%"

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/nov/20/richest-1-account-for-more-carbon-emissions-than-poorest-66-report-says

The numbers are staggering.

"It would take about 1,500 years for someone in the bottom 99% to produce as much carbon as the richest billionaires do in a year."

"A 60% tax on the incomes of the wealthiest 1% would raise $6.4tn a year and could cut emissions by 695m tonnes, which is more than the 2019 footprint of the UK"

I tend to set several alarms for waking up. 8:40, 8:50, 9:00, 9:10, hoping that one of them will get me awake somewhen around when I want to be up.

Maybe the snooze button isn't as bad as you might think.

tinbee,

@Mehrad
I might take a look. Fortunately I've gone from full-time dad to running a home business and back, so a lot of the time I can wake up whenever I'm ready. Saying that I have a small, loud alarm clock without a snooze option… it was born about 4 years ago.

At the end of the day, COVID-19 made people realize:

  • They could work from home and that most offices are shitty places.

  • Their job was really shitty.

  • Governments could finance pretty much anything they wanted.

  • Global warming could be stopped.

  • The really important jobs were the ones that are the worst paid (nurses, for instance).

  • Most governments are run by idiots, who are in the pocket of the wealthiest.

tinbee,

@ParadeGrotesque
…and then everyone forgot all that and went back to how things used to be. Mostly because the government likes you spending money and managers like to keep their eye on you 👁️

I remember having this on the , I remember getting very annoyed with this game. I think it was one of the end of level baddies that was so frustrating, but I didn't get that far today 😆

Not much to the game, run around, shoot & avoid baddies, collect power ups and rescue the people.

Game screenshot. It's shown from above with a tiled floor, with 2 red "aliens" a green face and a blue player with black hair. There is a rectangular area on the right that is black with striped "warning" lines around it.

Earthbound on the always seems to be praised. It's OK, but nothing special. It makes me laugh that when you defeat enemies, they don't die - they become "tame". It's a bit odd that half a dozen police attacked me. I found it funny that the map needs to be returned in 2001, which is very much not in the future.

The BBC is now reporting that the government won't be paying for to be connected through to central London, so the project will need to find the money from private backers if wants that section to be built.

Outstanding work from the government - they have turned an essential, vital piece of infrastructure into a regional rail line from Birmingham to the outskirts of London.

tinbee,

I loved Stunt Race FX. My teenage brain couldn't imagine graphics being better than this game. I think in many ways I still like the plain polygon style that it had without textures and possibly no shadows.

I was so pleased when I unlocked the motorbike!

tinbee,

@OutofPrintArchive
I don't think I remember it that well. I did have a 60 second go on an emulator a little while back and it was low framerate, but I assumed it was down to the emulation. I'm rarely a fan of modern remakes, sometimes they are ok but in some ways it can spoil the nostalgia.

I've just learned that Meta has, without my permission and in violation of my copyright, used at least one of my books to help train their generative AI, and I'm not down with that.

https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/09/books3-database-generative-ai-training-copyright-infringement/675363/?gift=QdM39RGtR94-pmclr4oVwi9lpuV63yswBnoweowTTIM&utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share&s=03

tinbee,

@petergleick
I was reading an article about this a few days ago and one thing that was pointed out is that unless they never read another book in their life then this is similar to the ideas that an author builds up over a lifetime of reading. They then mix and match these ideas along with their own style into their next book. Likewise, the ai "uses" these ideas to generate its story.

tinbee,

@petergleick
I do understand that the ai doesn't understand the data they input or output. But when put in those terms its harder, for me and presumably others, to see a clear distinction.

A writer takes old ideas, remixes them. An ai takes data and remixes it.

If the author's published story is too similar they may face legal action. If an ai's output is published and it's too similar then legal action makes sense.
