when i was a kid, buying a new game was serious business. it meant saving up my weekly farm-chore allowances of $2.50 for six to eight months, before I could afford a brand new computer game. this usually meant about one new PC game a year, along with whatever I got for christmas.

among the lost pieces of canadian computing history are the retail prices for computer hardware and software we swallowed in the 1990s

buried in the archives was this Softwarehouse catalogue from 1994 - an Edmonton-based computer retailer from the 80s and 90s.

enjoy skimming through the eyeball-gouging prices we paid back then, like an $80 copy of Isaac Asimov's Science Adventure for DOS. this was mostly due to a crushing US-CAN exchange rate at the time.

ps: anyone else remember visiting Softwarehouse in YEG? it was at 102 ave and 108 st :D

Prices for games: Dark Legons - $57.95 Isaac Asimov's Science Adventure - $79.95 Myst $74.95
Prices for desktop publishing software. CorelDraw 5 - $799.95 FrameMaker - $929
Prices for computer games. Myst $74.95 Microsoft Flight simulator $59.95 Doom $64.95 Spectre VR $59.95

in case anyone in needs a visual reference - this was the Softwarehouse building as of 2007 (occupied by a different tenant - it had been gone for over 10 years by that point)

If you live in Alberta I have two questions for you:

Q1: In recent months, how easy or difficult has it been for you to meet your monthly expenses?

Q2: Would you be willing to speak with me about that for a story I'm working on for CBC News?

Please reply and/or DM!

the city just finished cleaning and refilling paul kane park pond. the best hidden secret downtown, and a great place for a spring picnic.

thanks for all your hard work city crews! can’t wait for the ducks to come soon

Hey fellow folks, any recommendations on where to shop in town for starter plants for our balcony garden? 🪴 🌱 And more so, what can you realistically grow here on a balcony with the shorter summer?

Thanks!!

I’m so tired of expensive, bad haircuts in this city. It’s been a year and I still haven’t found a good barber… well, I did, but then he left Canada and hasn’t returned yet. :(

sad hair vibes.

I do not appreciate bringing back my allergies for the first time since I lived down in California. Rude. 😂

My face simultaneously burns and itches ALL DAY AND NIGHT now. Thx.

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is a scale from 1 to 10. Edmonton is a 10+ right now, at 39 times the WHO annual air quality guideline value.

With the #wildfire smoke in #yeg this weekend, I pulled the air purifiers up from the basement.

Does anyone know how the filters work for these? As in is there some sort of standard or does each manufacturer make unique?

I have a couple of Instant (as in Instant Pot) brand filters and they work well. But filters seem to be stupid expensive: 55CAD per filter. I think the original purifier was only 80CAD.

There similar looking/sized filters for half the price, but not sure if they'll work.

this is fun
looks like TLOU season 2 upped its game with set design in

the streets in for season 1 were decently dressed, but with nowhere near the same degree of detail

my neighbourhood squirrel was upset her bird feeder got flooded from the rain and soaked all the seed.

so this morning i drilled drains into the feeder and refilled it with fresh seed. she showed up a minute later and made herself at home 😂

Following the last toot, one of my favorite live music experiences ever was when they played on a stage set up in the middle of Whyte Ave in and led us all screaming "WE DO ACID WE DO ACID" in broad daylight. It was beautiful.

Hey @plants and gardeners of . Today was a big day - the first time this year where I went outside right after work to pull weeds. YAY 🤣🤣 (partially I am genuinely happy, but OTOH.... weeds 😫)

Question, can someone help me ID the (young) plant in the picture? It's spread widely already and is heavily rhizomatous.

If your answer is Campanula rapunculoides, I might cry
