when i was a kid, buying a new game was serious business. it meant saving up my weekly farm-chore allowances of $2.50 for six to eight months, before I could afford a brand new computer game. this usually meant about one new PC game a year, along with whatever I got for christmas.
among the lost pieces of canadian computing history are the retail prices for computer hardware and software we swallowed in the 1990s
buried in the archives was this Softwarehouse catalogue from 1994 - an Edmonton-based computer retailer from the 80s and 90s.
enjoy skimming through the eyeball-gouging prices we paid back then, like an $80 copy of Isaac Asimov's Science Adventure for DOS. this was mostly due to a crushing US-CAN exchange rate at the time.
ps: anyone else remember visiting Softwarehouse in YEG? it was at 102 ave and 108 st :D
in case anyone in #yeg needs a visual reference - this was the Softwarehouse building as of 2007 (occupied by a different tenant - it had been gone for over 10 years by that point)
Hey fellow #Edmonton folks, any recommendations on where to shop in town for starter plants for our balcony garden? 🪴 🌱 And more so, what can you realistically grow here on a balcony with the shorter summer?
"This government loudly rejects federal authority & is now collapsing the powers of the 2 big municipalities in Alberta that supported them the least in the last election. When we see a centralization of power like this in other countries we start worrying about those countries"
I’m so tired of expensive, bad haircuts in this city. It’s been a year and I still haven’t found a good barber… well, I did, but then he left Canada and hasn’t returned yet. :(
With the #wildfire smoke in #yeg this weekend, I pulled the air purifiers up from the basement.
Does anyone know how the filters work for these? As in is there some sort of standard or does each manufacturer make unique?
I have a couple of Instant (as in Instant Pot) brand filters and they work well. But filters seem to be stupid expensive: 55CAD per filter. I think the original purifier was only 80CAD.
There similar looking/sized filters for half the price, but not sure if they'll work.
Following the last #ShoutOutOutOutOut toot, one of my favorite live music experiences ever was when they played on a stage set up in the middle of Whyte Ave in #yeg and #CadenceWeapon led us all screaming "WE DO ACID WE DO ACID" in broad daylight. It was beautiful.
Hey @plants and gardeners of #Edmonton. Today was a big day - the first time this year where I went outside right after work to pull weeds. YAY 🤣🤣 (partially I am genuinely happy, but OTOH.... weeds 😫)
Question, can someone help me ID the (young) plant in the picture? It's spread widely already and is heavily rhizomatous.
If your answer is Campanula rapunculoides, I might cry
