'The full history of Atlantic slavery is scarcely taught in the US or the UK, and so it’s not surprising that few people in either country know much about Tacky’s revolt. Until recently, however, I didn’t realise that Jamaicans don’t know this history much better. I had assumed that in a country with a Black majority population, which had emerged from one of the most brutal slave societies in human history, basic education would have offered a much better understanding of slavery and its legacies than the one I had received in the US. This is a massive "stuff you" to the western world - they are perfectly aware of how much it screws with everyone else, and regard this as a feature. Indeed, they absolutely delight in it.

We're excited to have copies of "No Spiritual Surrender: Indigenous Anarchy in Defense of the Sacred," an essay collection by Diné artist and Indigenous Action Media founder Klee Benally. Grounded in his experiences as an agitator and media maker, informed by family histories and cultural teachings, Benally offers a searing rebuke to settler colonialism, including its progressive and Left-wing manifestations. This is a wide-ranging volume that beautifully weaves together movement history, memoir, hard-won lessons, and (anti-)political provocations!

🗣 The call for papers of the international conference "Religious Consciences and Colonialism: Experiences and Legacies" was extended until 21 October.
The meeting will explore religious figures and institutions which raised their voices and took action again colonialism and the dictatorship of the Estado Novo.
🆕 Sakiru Adebayo, winner of the Amílcar Cabral Prize 2022, will be in Lisbon next week, taking part in various events organised by the IHC and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos / EGEAC.
