Both Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin were “rebellious,” the white and Black establishment BOTH looked down on them, and neither was the first Black person to refuse to give up their seat for a white passenger in Montgomery. The fight for equality and against injustice was long and difficult and it was a collective struggle, not an individual one.
#BF
Born today in 1940, the FIRST American woman to ever win 3 Olympic gold medals, survived polio, pneumonia, & scarlet fever. Wilma Glodean Rudolph, “the fastest woman in the world,” set world records in 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash & 4 x 100 meter relay. She cemented her mark in the record books, and, in the process, inspired the world with her life story.
One of my biggest concerns about switching over to Mastodon when I did, was losing the online Black community I developed on birb site, many of whom were very helpful to my continuing to thrive as I negotiated white supremacist spaces in my professional and personal life. I am very happy to find another such community here, and want to give a shout outs to SOME (wish I could tag everybody - the search function is pretty terrible here for some reason) of the people that keep me coming back to the Fediverse. Love you guys!
(Side note: the autofill "@" function for Mastodon really sucks - fully 85% of the time it autofills Neil Gaiman - so it took me a REALLY long time to populate this list. And I can't find the homie Jaden from Chicago)
Blues, once a popular and influential musical genre, has become scarce in many Black communities, with seeming abandonment by young Black-Americans. At just 24 years years old, Kingfish (Christone Ingram), represents a resurgence of the blues due to his remarkable talent, life story, youthful energy, & dedication to the blues.
