So cool, I met a lot of people from #fnf22 and #fnf23 in #Brussels at #37c3 -
let's have a little reunion tomorrow at 16h in this random space on the carpet...:
Join the discussion with experts on #DigitalRights. Policy nerds, civil society reps, grassroots activists, academics and #fnf23-participants: this event organised by @edri is for you!
@bagder I heard at #fnf23 that the obligations only apply to consumers with whom you have a business relationship with. People who use your software for free either have to do the risk assessment and co themselves or have a contract with you. Which would make sense, but I'm not a lawyer so take my words with a grain of salt 😜
In my train back from #fnf23. This was a great event and I found it very refreshing to got to a conference to discuss more about the political aspects than technical access of our digital rights. Definitively will try to go again next year and many thanks to @digitalcourage and the rest of the orga team for organizing it!
We had a lot of fun and kickstarted an initiative to bring closer the #EU institutions to the Fediverse (more updates soon! @vishnee@zzepposs@erikkemp)
Also, with MEP Patrick Beyer we discussed about how #CSAR may undermine our fundamental right to privacy, as well as new developments in border control by the EU
I just attended a very inspiring #FnF23 session convened by @erikkemp on the topic of Fediverse governance. People from many countries, backgrounds and groups were present.
In my opinion, it's too early for creating governing bodies, and I'm not sure we will ever need them. What I find useful is covenants that instances can sign. E.g. digitalcourage.social signed the well-known Mastodon covenant <https://joinmastodon.org/covenant> as well as the #fedimins covenant <https://fedimins.net/en/covenant/> which is still a work in progress.
#Encryption is awesome. It helps to keep everyday people safe. It enables journalists to do their work and do their share for a healthier democracy. Encryption should be easily accessible and trustworthy for everyone. That's why I say YES to encryption! #CelebrateEncryption #FreedomNotFear#FnF23
4 years ago we had a #fediverse session at #fnf19 that basically was a sign up session.
On this years #fnf23 we already have big policy discussions and workshops on how to ensure a healthy growth of the #fediverse
The European Data Protection Supervisor (@EDPS) Wojciech Wiewiórowski (@EDPS_supervisor) right now giving a brief input on “Fediverse for Public Administration. Why we try and why we fail”.
Responding to a (too) short definition of the Fediverse as an antidote to big-tech social media platforms, he stated:
“I have nothing against big. I have nothing against American. I have nothing against platforms. I have something against being dependent.”
A recording of the talk will be published on his office's PeerTube instance (@edps / @edps_tv).
#FnF23 starts off tonight with a hot issue: European Data Protection (@EDPS) Supervisor (@EDPS_supervisor) Wojciech Wiewiórowski will give a brief input on
:win3_computer: “Fediverse for Public Administration. Why we try and why we fail” followed by a fishbowl discussion.
:thinking_rotate: 19h at Mundo Madou (Avenue des Arts 7-8, 1210 Brussels).
Freedom not Fear is starting today! Join the privacy barcamp in Brussels at Mundo Madou (Avenue des Arts 7–8) from 6 pm no matter whether you have registered or not!
We (the Bielefeld delegation of @digitalcourage) took an early train to make sure we arrive before you do. So far, the train is on time. A big shout-out goes to the Brussels organising team who are making things happen.
