"In many Muslim majority countries..the charge of blasphemy remains a powerful tool for those in power to consolidate support, silence critics and target minorities. In the west, so-called community leaders – usually self-appointed gatekeepers – similarly use blasphemy claims to police Muslim communities and reinforce their power within them"

"These questions remain dormant until the cancers of #intolerance, #hatred and #violence shatter our collective sense of security and raise them anew: Am I, as a #Jew, safe in this land that I call home? What steps must I take to protect my family? Will this moment pass or should I consider fleeing now, before the storm engulfs us?
History has shown time and again that how we answer those questions can mean the difference between life and death."
"One of the most disturbing, and most sweeping, signs of partisanship in the current age is a terrifying rise in homophobia on the right. This year over 520 anti LGBT laws have been introduced in state legislatures, the most on record. Seventy of those have been enacted. These include bills which strip former legal protections from LGBT people. They also include a slew of bills that deny medical affirming care to trans youth."

@stephanie sounds like an anti-homeless / anti-immigrant* tactic. Sigh.
I'm guessing they want libraries to not be warming centers. But, really, what better place to warm up? If they're going to police something, why not behaviours?
people who eat a lot of spices may smell of spice - not actually a hygeine issue at all :-(
The most challenging part of being in human resources is investigating a harassment and discrimination claim and finding out that the person that's being discriminated against is trans.. #discrimination#trans#intolerance
Well, Jacinta and the other nutjobs across the country will be happy this morning, all six states showed a 'No' majority to tolerance and acceptance in the results of the referendum, proving the vast majority as it stands today are racist willfully-ignorant people I live amongst here in Australia. We could have been a step closer to healing today with an overwhelming 'Yes', but people chose to widen the division even further with a 'No'.. very sad times... https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-14/south-australia-votes-no-in-voice-to-parliament-referendum/102977312
#Germany's anti-discrimination agency quits X over anti-minority posts
@antidiskriminierung said it would close its account on SocialMedia platform #X, formerly #Twitter, because of increasing #intolerance of minorities expressed by users on the site, and urged other bodies to follow suit.
"Other state agencies and government ministries should ask themselves whether it made sense to remain on a [...] a disinformation network"

‘But people, the ordinary faithful, are offended by crude comic blasphemies,’ voices are raised to tell me. Yes indeed. But what of my religion? I am a lover of truth, a worshipper of freedom, a celebrant at the altar of language and purity and tolerance. That is my religion, and every day I am sorely, grossly, heinously and deeply offende…

It seems like personal, unreflected fear is the driving force for hate and intolerance. How do you fix that? How would you teach people to not fear certain things?... 🤔 Recently I discussed with someone who is pro forbidding people to wear a hijab, and the only real argument was that they fear people wearing those. That it's weird and unusual. They didn't seem like a hateful person, it was just the fear of something they rarely see which leads them to decide for restricting freedom of others...
Fear can be weakened or even fixed. At least through attempting to face fears, therapy and maybe even some basic reasoning all by yourself. But it needs work and you need to be ready to do the work if you really want to overcome fear of a specific thing (depends on the fear, what is the best course of action).
Disdain...well, that's another thing that needs work. But, if the person isn't willing to hear any other opinions, then it's pretty much impossible to go for a change, and you cannot force a person. Examples, statistics, research and stories can be used, but some of us are very stubborn or otherwise don't want to consider any other points of views.
Depends on a person how they deal with bad news. Their experiences/history, personality and other factors.
I as an example enjoy to talk about difficult topics with people even when I don't experience them myself and I'm always happy to help in reasoning and getting ideas on how to maybe fix something.
What you are trying to undo...
I'm not sure what you mean with this. But if I can make people to choose stuff via their own free will and to consider things through their own reasoning - in ways that don't harm them or others - that sounds like a thing I'd be happy to be guilty about!
Probably that too, but not always. Fear is one another factor.
Which is deeply rooted -and has always beern - into humans...
Intolerance?
One reason for racism/intolerance is the fear of the unknown. If you see an individual for the first time that has some characteristics you have never seen anywhere else, I wouldn't be surprised if you felt doubt or even fear. You could (also) be just curious instead.
Some of us prepare for the worst. That's cool as long as it doesn't make you behave in a bad way.
You still can fight urges, no matter what they are and where they come from. Or seek help to overcome them if you're not strong enough to do it yourself or if you don't know how to do it yourself.
I'd rather feel indifference towards anyone around me than intolerance.
One of the most interesting concepts to understand some of the ways in which intolerance, contempt and rejection of social groups (in addition to racism, xenophobia, sexism or the multiple forms of discrimination, and even attacks, towards LGBTIQ+ people) are manifested today is "aporophobia", a neologism created by the Spanish philosopher Adela Cortina.
"Because we can’t recognize something we can’t name, she proposes the term “aporophobia” for the pervasive exclusion, stigmatization, and humiliation of the poor, which cuts across xenophobia, racism, antisemitism, and other prejudices". "Once you're willing to debate whether one group of people or another should be abused, then abusing and expelling people from society is something that is up for debate."

Really good thread about being "reasonable" when discussing intolerance from A. R. Moxon.
The Paradox of Tolerance disappears if you look at tolerance, not as a moral standard, but as a social contract.
If someone does not abide by the contract, then they are not covered by it.
In other words: The intolerant are not abiding by the terms of the social contract of mutual tolerance. Since they have broken the terms of the contract, they are no longer covered by the contract, and their intolerance should NOT be tolerated.
