I bought a #Fairphone5 late last year. I went through all sorts of reviews. My favourite was likely #LouisRossmann just going through all the documentation supplied by #Fairphone.
The review which really convinced me was some person going through everything and concluding that you could get a phone with better specs for a lower price. The fact that they couldn't wrap their head around the appeal of #repairability and parts made to last made me buy one.
It does have the nVidia GeForce 9400M graphics, which will probably be handled just fine by the installer since it is so old, we'll see.
Now, I usually do not work on Apple products, but this is a classic and it is for a friend. The MacBook A1278 is my favorite MacBook model. It was a long running series, so there are quite a few variants and not all their parts are compatible with each other.
Since it is long out of support by Apple, this is probably already considered "retro".
While having a repair shop open, we made quite a bit of money with the "caddy fix" as these A1278 models had frequent failures of the SATA connection to the SATA storage drive. The solution was to take out the optical DVD drive and replace it with a caddy that would hold a 2.5 inch SATA drive and put the storage drive there.
So far, this particular MacBook does not need that, as the hard drive is recognized.
@matthew the Problem with the 9400M on MacBooks is that they suffer from #Apple's bad engineering thar leads to overheating and Kernel Panics from undervolting...
And yes, #DRM and #CopyProtection is the reason why huge broadcasters have their workstations' and servers' drives cloned and backed up as setup in a ready-to-go-state because they can't be bothered dealing with shitty DRM and product activation if a device decides to die.
And money isn't the problem: They literally have fully-decked out hp z-series workstations on cold standby in case one breaks.
I can finally reveal some research I've been involved with over the past year or so.
We (@redford, @mrtick and I) have reverse engineered the PLC code of NEWAG Impuls EMUs. These trains were locking up for arbitrary reasons after being serviced at third-party workshops. The manufacturer argued that this was because of malpractice by these workshops, and that they should be serviced by them instead of third parti

The good part of any #NonCompeteClause in #Germany is that those are null and void if the former #Employer doesn't pay them as if they were still employed for the duration of their clause, since it restricts their ability to earn the same amount of #income.
And I think that's a valid balance between preventing competitiors from "hiring away key personnel" and the ability for small businesses to defend themselves against "hostile corrosion" tactics...
Him being a convicted #capitalist who is #consistent in his logic and understanding makes him if not agreeable at least respectable and acceptable, since he's not nitpicking only the aspects he likes and disregards what he dislikes.
Linux laptop and smartphone company Purism has done a lot to help make Linux usable as a smartphone OS. But the company burns through a lot of good will by charging high prices for its hardware (the price of a Librem 5 smartphone has more than doubled since it first launched), taking years to ship devices to folks who pre-order, and then delaying or denying refunds. https://forums.puri.sm/t/louiss-rossman-on-purism/21009/7#Purism#LinuxSmartphones#Librem5#LouisRossmann
I saw this comment on an article posted on @arstechnica about #YouTube increasing their price for YouTube Premium. And yes, YT does need competition, the problem is most creators want their content to be seen, and hopefully get compensation for the effort involved in making the content, and #Google simply has the cash and gravitational presence to make it happen.
If you want competition, start supporting alternatives, and letting creators know that you won't be watching their content on YT. 💙
