"The record-setting Canadian in 2023 were caused mainly by igniting forests that were unusually hot and dry, in part due to .

But the recent conviction of a Quebec man led to false claims on social media that the majority of the fires were the result of arson.

[In fact] fires with a criminal origin accounted for less than 0.02% of the fires in that province."

@CelloMomOnCars its just a plain law
When people want to make sense of a complex world, they choose simplistic explanations. In times of on the rise they scream them while holding their hands high

Fernandes & Won: The Unintended Consequences of Amplifying the Radical Right on
in @polcommjournal

"Our findings show that users amplify the radical right’s original message via weak ties and cascade effects in making negative quoted tweets. Ultimately, denouncing the radical right backfires and helps nascent illiberal parties to reach out to more users in the network and gain more users."

NYT’s opinion writer Paul Krugman is declaring is now a culture war issue 🤔

I worked in the U.S. Senate ~20 years ago. Covered climate as a journalist. Cofounded an NGO focused on science policy issues during elections. Am finishing a dissertation on how Congress has made decisions about policy for the last 1/2 century - with climate as a central theme.

This isn’t new. has always been a culture war issue.

“The fact that the climate war is now part of the culture war worries me, a lot. Special interests can do a great deal of damage, but they can be bought off or counterbalanced with other special interests.”

hanscees,

@Sheril @Ruth_Mottram In the of the world looks different. Same as the bubble of or other "leaders".
The selection processes and internal dynamics tied to their role makes them more easily extremists.

Also the article on bad beliefs is fascinating. Humans take social cues into account on what they believe. We are social animals in a clan / bubble sense but also in what we believe and these are intertwined.
    alert I would say.
