The deed is done. Debian is installed. Windows is gone for good.

30 years of Microsoft OS experience down the drain, because they can't not be capitalist dicks.

What a waste. 🙁

What distro will you be switching to?

Nefilim,

@Tutanota Already switched to Linux five years ago. First , now .

herrbischoff,
@herrbischoff@mastodon.social avatar

@Tutanota None. Reality check: this is a smug and somewhat privileged position to take. The vast majority of Windows users cannot or will not switch to Linux or anything else, for many reasons. Best case, they will simply stay with their current version of Windows, regardless of support status. Once they buy a new computer, the new OS will be pre-installed on it. Because for the vast majority of humans, that’s how computers work. Somehow, I had expected more nuance from Tuta.

This whole thread about the Recall feature on #Microsoft Copilot PCs is making me anxious about future workplaces that may supply a Recall-capable #Windows laptop, and enforcing it/the policy to be enabled.

You should never install personal stuffs on a work PC for privacy reasons, but doesn't this take it to a whole nother level where you couldn't/shouldn't even i.e. reply to personal messages on it cos it's all recorded? 😮‍💨

But meh, fuck employers that'd force you to use a certain OS anyway.

RE: https://cyberplace.social/users/GossiTheDog/statuses/112479974357074203

irfan,

@rakyat yea, this is the other side of the coin - there's an incentive for employers to enforce it but also a counter that should hopefully prevent them from even considering it. Overall, this feature does sound like an absolute nightmare.

Microsoft should know that all they need to do is just fix their broken search function and implement a working Spotlight-like feature found on macOS and Linux where people could easily look for their files or wtv else insanely quickly - even from their content in cases of files, instead of having an AI watch over you 24/7.

But ofc, they don't have an incentive to do that lol.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@irfan I can actually see how it’ll scare lots of middle managers as they often rely on untraceable communications to enforce their shenanigans haha. The same reason why many employees like to send emails that start with “as discussed, you’ve said this on WhatsApp…” On the other hand, I can also see my HR being thrilled at this feature as they already monitor everyone via the office wifi network.

My current workflow includes using a #windows Virtual Machine for the sole purpose of running #Microsoft Office and #OneDrive , and this clunky solution is still leagues better than actually running Windows on nearly every measure.

The pain the limited time I spend in that wee VM window underscores how bad Windows has gotten over the years.

mpjgregoire,
@mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca avatar

@jszym There's a Linux client for OneDrive, and I understand it's supported directly under the newest version of GNOME.

I wonder if it's possible to use LibreOffice and have sufficient compatibility with MS Office for your purposes...

I also have to use MS products for work, but the IT department keeps things locked down.

jszym,
@jszym@cosocial.ca avatar

@mpjgregoire LibreOffice is 99.99% of the way there on compatibility for my purposes. The track changes, citations, and layout are totally cross-compatible, but equations have been getting mangled between the two.

I thought I heard that OneDrive for linux was mothballed a while ago, but I'll give it a second look! I'd have to keep the VM for other things, but it'd still help.

So if you have installed, always make sure you have a media player window open, playing some DRMed content, I dunno, Disney’s Frozen or some such. Paused, perhaps, or you’ll start losing it. Then it won’t record you.

The hilarious thing about Microsoft going all in on AI with and , they threw Intel and AMD under the bus. The whole last year of "AI PCs" won't get features like Recall.
The consumer reaction to Recall has been overwhelmingly negative, but all these companies are afraid of shareholders and investors wanting more AI hype to make stock prices look good.
But and have all these chips made that are falling in price fast.
You can find some CRAZY deals on computers right now that WONT run Recall, but are over-kill powerful for home systems.

https://somegadgetguy.com/b/45e

Mini PC's used to sell chips that were two or three years old. This Geekom is using AMD's current laptop chip, with 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage for $899!

It's a REAL good time to shop a NON Recall compatible PC.

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@mordoc There are already apps that do similar things for the MacBook, but nothing built into the OS so far.
The inherent distrust of Microsoft will deliver significantly more criticism of a feature like that than Apple doing the same or worse at the OS level.
Describe what Recall is to anyone, and I'd guess seven out of ten squint while you describe it.

Think I need to start planning for a total free software future. Been using Windows 10 for work and because it’s tolerable. Changed to VS Code because it’s a very good lightweight IDE. This spyware has forced me to conclude that have turned evil. I was optimistically naïve to think they might not be, in hindsight. So, must look to changing to Linux Mint everywhere, and getting my setup perfected. (May revisit , if it has a tree view now). As for Apple.. hmm.
