#Capitalism isn't evil. It doesn't care about helping or harming at all. Just profit.
Folks make pro-or-con arguments by aligning it with good or bad consequences of the profit motive, most of which are #obvious
I kinda think it needs counterbalance from government regulation and oversight, and labor unions, which makes me a communist to some and a capitalist to others.
Captain Obvious strikes again! A company that struggled with finding workers started to offer significantly more pay + benefits and suddenly the workers came.
This is not the first time something like this has happened. I find it quite amusing how busniness people act super surprised about this as if they have completely forgotten about the principle of supply and demand. 🙄
I'm going to have a bit of a #tech#rant (less charitable people might say #whine) here. If you just want jokes and cute bunny pictures, feel free to skip this one.
Object of my #ire this week? #Furnaces. I'm not even going to rant about their main control boards; most of that's been said better than I could say it, by others with more knowledge than I.
I'm #impressed by what it accomplishes; it is quite the #feat, and not totally #obvious at first glance.
But it means that little control module is really quite #complicated, and is a dense little #blob of high-power circuitry. It would be expensive enough just for that.
#Technical#documentation is too often written by the engineers/etc who built the system being documented. Most of what a normal person first exposed to the system would need to know to make sense of it is so #obvious to them they don't even think about it.
I do my best to try to get into users' headspace when writing docs. But there's something to be said for having a dedicated technical #writer who can be that typical user and document what end users actually need.
There are many large and #serious#problems in the world. Many people are victimized by the #system in a thousand different ways. This is not their story; it is not about their problems, but this should not be seen as minimizing them.
I'd like to talk about something a little closer to home: #employee#abuse in the #tech field. I've been in this field for <mumble> years and worked for tiny companies, medium consulting companies, large orgs, and as a one-man independent contractor.
Before I go further, there's one big exception to what I'm describing; I'll mention that at the end, so hold your rotten tomatoes.
What's wrong with brown-bag lunch-and-learns?
Well, it's the #obvious thing. Most companies ask their employees to attend these on their #lunch hour, or on other #personal time.
That would be fine, except many - perhaps most - of these sessions are actually for giving employees #information to use in the #performance of their #job#duties.
