In the olden days, when bread was baked at home, bad luck would seep into the bread when one cursed while baking.
And if the loaf would be placed over the table's edge, sickness would soon enter the house.
A loaf placed upside down would sway, because the poor souls would try to turn it, & if the head of the house cut the bread crookedly, then he had just lied...
Hey #IT people. When in your career do you get to the place where you are “good”, that you’ve “made it” and don't mind staying where you are?
My last and current job have turned out to be pretty easy and low responsibility, yet I get paid well and things are good. It’s just not challenging anymore and I don't enjoy not being able to do what's right. Do I have any room to complain? Or should I count my blessings, keep pressing, and enjoy it?
I've had a number of really "dumb" things happen this week that have made me stop and think about my job and where it is going. Companies can sure create a toxic, ignorant culture that ruins something that you like to do.
But again, it's easy money. Is it wrong to complain? I feel that I do a great job, but the resistance to change holds me back from learning and doing new things that could vastly improve the tech heartbeat.
Haaretz Editorial: "The freedom from arbitrary arrest marks a line between real, freedom-seeking democracies and 'pseudo democracies.' The police under Ben Gvir’s shadow cannot be relied to give freedom of expression the importance it warrants"
"Haaretz is widely considered Israel's leading liberal news source, but it has published and promoted some of the most harmful propaganda in support of Israel’s genocide in Gaza."
There are many large and #serious#problems in the world. Many people are victimized by the #system in a thousand different ways. This is not their story; it is not about their problems, but this should not be seen as minimizing them.
I'd like to talk about something a little closer to home: #employee#abuse in the #tech field. I've been in this field for <mumble> years and worked for tiny companies, medium consulting companies, large orgs, and as a one-man independent contractor.
There is the sweetest little pit bull here(crazy, I know) she’s elderly though, and doesn’t belong here. Does anyone know who to contact to ensure she goes to a safe place? I’ve asked the neighbours and they don’t seem to be missing a dog, and animal control is closed on the weekends. I really really need help with this, I’ve given her food and water but that’s as much as I can really do.
In the past I've found #problems in #software, problems with #websites, with bureaucratic processes, some of which were significant, but they all pale in comparison to this one.
Wow, Amazon’s “guaranteed day of release delivery” of a pre-ordered game translating to “by 10pm on the day of release” is really pathetic. Order canceled; downloaded straight from Nintendo (even though I would have preferred to have a physical copy) #zelda
@keithjgrant Mine said that it would be delivered precisely in the narrow period between 12:00am to 11:00pm. Luckily it was dropped off on my stoop in the morning; but it wasn’t packaged in an external box, just a package with #zelda branding all over it. Come on #amazon…I don’t need my neighbors to know that I’m a #serious#gamer :blobfoxsignbaka: :blobcatgamer:
