Tonight, I watched a big-name writer bully another writer with a smaller presence. Basically, threaten to sue said writer.
I’m done with #Substack Notes. Watching this happen was the last straw for me. If this is how the “best” of Substack behaves, I want out.
I do not want to be somewhere where I’ll be subject to this toxicity or see others being subjected to it.
So, I will no longer be using Notes.
Am actually relieved cos I can now focus on what matters.
I have more fun on #Mastodon than #Substack Notes. Why is that? 🤔 It's probably personal - I just feel a lot of pressure on #SubstackNotes, an air of competitiveness and lots of "look at me" posts.
Over here on Mastodon I have so carefully cultivated my feed and friends that I am only exposed to people who are laid back and just love to share their passion on various topics. I don't feel as pressured here. Hmm.
I have over 80 #Substack subscriptions. I realise that I can't keep up. :( Am going to narrow down the list to those that I'll want to build a relationship with & who talk back ;P #SubstackNotes is interesting but it is a LOT OF WORK to get noticed!
I need to be realistic and remind myself that I can't do it all,. Also a frustration - currently the ecosystem lacks diversity.Reading about US issues all the time was wearing me down. #SocialMedia
Probably the weirdest comment I got on the relatively tame and slow #SubstackNotes so far.
FYI minorities can be racists too.
Also, obviously he/she does not understand #malaysians
Dear idiot, I speak 4 languages. I switch comfortably between all, but write mostly in English. Also, Malaysians are not called "Malays". There are Chinese Malaysians, Malay Malaysians etc.
Oh the stupidity of some people. Rolls eyes #Substack
So on #SubstackNotes, people are complaining aboutfake accounts signing up as subscribers of their newsletters. One writer had nearly 100 fake crypto spammers in her subscriber list suddenly.
I do wonder how #Substack is going to manage this. Unlike #Mastodon where admins & mods can just deal with the flood, what options do Substackers have?
Amazing how I don’t see any mentions of #SubstackNotes in my timelines these days. #Notes apparently had a very short run as the new shiny. Guessing this is due partially to their CEO’s poor interview about their poor policies. Ok, just kidding. Feels like many didn’t care about that. It is really just the need to chase the next big thing, #Bluesky. Anyone remember #Hive? So long ago in the social wars that one was.
Is #Substack a Nazi bar ... or simply misunderstood?
In this article I discuss the interview that started it all, social media's response to it, why top down moderation is not the solution and why #SubstackNotes is not a Twitter killer.
PS: Please be civil and courteous in the comments. I know it’s a controversial topic for some, but let’s learn to listen to each other :)
