There was once a This American Life piece about regulars at a certain city diner. Among the profiled was a beloved customer who had supper there every night. Always he made a point of carefully paging through the whole menu before invariably ordering the meatloaf.
The Styx is one of the rivers of the Greek Underworld, but many legends say it starts above ground. Herodotus placed the Styx's mouth near the Greek village of Feneos but other people place it on Mount Aroania in Achaea, Greece. Aroania even has a Styx Waterfall.

I am making an #Underworld setting in #5E. And need a healing mechanic for the Immortals. Something they can use in a hunger system. And am looking for some #Mastodon feedback.
Current process is "2d4 + Con mod". Players can use it with an action. And gain a hunger. They have 3 hungers (lvl 1-4) before they lose control. And have other Immortal abilities that use hunger.
I titled this picture "and the colour red" after the #Underworld track released last Spring. The clip footage is from their performance at Royal Albert Hall.
One of the most mysterious objects in #Rome is the Lapis Manalis¹.
In #Roman Religion (but probably, it is derived from the Etruscan civilization), such stone was placed on wells which divided the living world from the #underworld.
For example, in Rome, one of these stones was placed above the Mundus Cereris², on the Palatine Hill.
The mundus was a circular well, or hole, shaped like an upside down uterus. The term could denote the femal organ, but also could mean "purification".
According to the tradition, the Lapis was always held in place to keep the mundus shut.
In three days of the year (24th of August, 5th of October and 8th of November), the stone was removed and the barrier between two worlds was thinner.
During these days, public and military matters were stopped to avoid to displease underworld gods.
"Mundus cum patet, deorum tristium atque inferum quasi ianua patet": When the mundus is open, it is as if a door stands open for the sorrowful gods of the underworld.
