Now I have #mastodon, #email and #matrix in #emacs. Funny how communications on computers are easier to focus on without all the intense animations, colors and ads. I feel much more relaxed and ready to work when it's all texted based.
Boy do I love #matrix.org having issues again. It just doesn't feel like a truly modern replacement for things like #XMPP if it were stable and usable.
@someodd I use them for different situations. #irc is used for public rooms of community projects. #xmpp is good for private messaging and gateways to legacy networks.
If that is not happening, then why, what is stopping you?
The (wrong and silly) assumption that everyone must use Google/Apple phones is expected from Big Tech these days but you are supposed to be among the good guys. Please help us be free from Google/Apple 🙂
Just installed the Prosody #XMPP server on my home server using the #NixOS module and a Let's Encrypt certificate. Everything just works out of the box, including E2E encryption and push notifications to Monal on iOS.
Are you running #Conversations_im on an Realme or OnePlus devices with stock ROM? Are calls still working for you on version 2.14.2 and above?
Not working would likely manifest itself as a dialog that says "Call not sent" or the operating system opening the default calling app instead of the Conversations UI. Incoming calls would likely be rejected as busy immediately. (There may or may not be other symptoms.)
Please let me know either way and tell me your Android version.

Offene Protokolle wie #matrix und #xmpp sind für alle Geräte verfügbar. Warum werden diese nicht bevorzugt eingesetzt oder wenigestens ebenfalls angeboten?
#Conversations
A beta version of 2.15 arrived at F-Droid. It looks great and now uses Material 3 theme. Be aware: To install this version you need to explicitly select it in F-Droid.
#monocleschat
A new minor version has been released which brings GIF import, compatible stickers and other improvements.
#Snikket
A new version has been released bringing fixes and improvements from Conversations to Snikket users.
And additionally: Thank you to all the people being active in the #XMPP community and offering more digital sovereignty for everyone (including the developers of all the other great XMPP apps, libraries, ...).
Can anymany tell me how I'm "supposed" to use end-to-end encryption with XMPP?
As far as I can tell there are three totally different ways to do E2EE:
a)OTR : "[https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0364.html](Not intended to be a current standard), or technical specification, as better (albeit, newer and less well tested) methods of end-to-end encryption exist for XMPP. "
b)OpenPGP: There are at least two different XEPs about it. XEP-0027 is obsolete, while XEP-0373 is "experimental" but hasn't been updated in almost three years.
c)OMEMO: "Experimental" and hasn't been updated in over two years.
Is there a way to do E2EE in XMPP which is neither deprecated nor experimental? What's the "Current stable" way to do it?
I'm considering starting a new project (yes, I know), an #XMPP External Component that is a full MIX implementation -- particularly including MIX-MUC, crucial for backwards compatibility.
At this point I'd only do it with a sponsorship or grant or some such. I don't want to take on the responsibility and sacrifice my free time for it just for it to blow up in my face, I'd much rather have some support structure in place.
Just a heads-up that #Snikket#Android has been pulled by #Google from the store. We'll work on restoring it once we figure out their (as usual) nonsensical complaints. Apologies to everyone affected. Please look at #FDroid and free yourself.
Today's excuse for delisting yet another #XMPP app?
"Your app is uploading users' Image information without posting a privacy policy link or text within the Play Distributed App."
Note, that not everyone limits the use of the term #fediverse to the AP protocol. Many apply it to AP, Diaspora, Matrix, #XMPP, etc. After all, communication between the "sub-federations" is possible.
Many people affected by the recent blocking of #Telegram in 🇪🇸 Spain are looking for alternatives - especially decentralized ones.
#Snikket is one of those alternatives, and fully open-source. However, our Spanish translations are lacking, which can lead to a poor experience for our #hispanohablante friends.
If you think you could help us with translation, please reach out 🙂
@shuro Snikket is XMPP for people who don't know what #XMPP is 🙂
If you're happy with Conversations, continue using it! Snikket is more limited because it focuses on a specific use case.
If you want an easy-to-use messaging solution for a group of people (e.g. family, friends, clubs), plus companion apps and easy onboarding without forcing people to learn what a "XEP" is, then Snikket is here for you: https://snikket.org/start/
