"Our goal, as a not-for-profit organization, is to run this sustainably. Our business model is a simple one that does not involve data harvesting/mining. Instead we charge a simple fee per instance that you host with us... This fee pays for the servers, maintenance and other associated costs. Any extra revenue is used to further our goals - building and promoting sustainable communication solutions."
Since the first day I have been using XMPP, and that's been quite a while ago, I have been wishing for such a feature. Stoked that in the near future Message Displayed Synchronization will be a reality ❤️
Hey, I'm currently doing a little research on the cost of modern social media and messaging, given that cost is an everlasting discussion when trying to move people to more free alternatives.
I am still looking for data for messaging, such as #XMPP and #Matrix. So if you have or know someone who operates a somewhat sizable instance for either XMPP or Matrix and would potentially share some details about operational cost with me I would love to hear about it! :)
@snikket_im just started their new federated instant messaging hosting service (based on #XMPP) for everyone.
This can really be a gamechanger for instant messaging.
You can bring your own domain name if you want to.
This means: for about 5.50€ (6$) a month (according to the website) you get ten instant messaging accounts for you and your family/friends using your personal domain name (not included).
And you are able to talk to every other XMPP user out there.
En relación al debate que surge de gente a la que le irrita que se recomiende #Matrix en vez de #XMPP, diría que uséis lo que más os guste para vuestros grupos/comunidades y punto, que cada cual tendréis vuestras razones para preferir una u otra cosa.
With the blocking of #Telegram in #Spain, many people are now looking for #alternatives to this messaging app. Here's a good article (Comparison of #InstantMessengers) that shows that there is no shortage of safe and #opensource options.
Just made commits after a long gap to #Convo, my #XMPP app for #KaiOS. Still many basics to be worked out like rendering chats properly and allowing users to start a new conversation, but at least it's hackily usable :xmpp:
PS: if anyone familiar with #ConverseJS can help with making a headless version of the #OMEMO plugin that would be much appreciated! Please boost if you know anyone who can help there 🔒
"…it became increasingly clear that, as easy as we make self-hosting, it’s always going to require skills or time that people don’t have. If we want everyone to be a part of this network, we can’t expect them all to learn Linux, SSH and system administration!"
An important distinction is slowly being uncovered about the definition of the term "fediverse." Who is it that gets to decide what this place is? How are we being represented? These are not easy questions to answer and if we don't do a better job describing ourselves, then the job will get done for us by people who don't understand the underlying values we hold. #fediverse#meta#threads
@liaizon Personally, and the way the term was used, since it was first coined, was any software with #OStatus support (later #ActivityPub).
When there were discussions of having a new name, I ran suggestion threads and polls about it, and one suggestion/choice was mycelial, mycelium. I like it so I started using it myself.
I too had my own #XMPP server back in the day and federated with #Google and their #GoogleTalk and saw first hand when they unilaterally broke the federation and all my friends stayed there. I ended up so burnt out that I didn't host or manage a server again until this year with #Mastodon.
I'm a little late to this, but I feel the need to mention it because I feel like these people are just going to move to Telegram, if they already haven't.
Telegram is NOT a better alternative to Discord. It asks for your phone number (huge red flag), lies about being end-to-end encrypted (encryption is done server-side), is centralized, and not entirely FOSS (server-side software is closed source). Look into decentralized/self-hosted solutions instead.
I personally recommend hosting an XMPP server. Install an XMPP server stack that supports multi-user-chats and host your discussions there. With XMPP, you can sign up for an account on any server and talk to anyone, including people from other servers. There are even modernized web-clients like Movim which make it more user friendly.
For private/direct messages, you can also end-to-end encrypt them using OMEMO. Just don't use them for public MUCs or you will end up having problems. You really don't need to encrypt a public chat anyway.
If you need help running an XMPP server, Mental Outlaw made a video on it.
Problem gibt.
#XMPP so what clients are people using on desktop? Gajim is fineee but it's having trouble pulling in gspell despite the fact it's installed? python weirdness?
