Birmingham, where should I be to fully enjoy the local beer culture in your wonderful city? Asking for a friend, obviously.

To those of you using apps for keeping track of and rating or reviewing beers: any experience with BeerHive? The UI looks nicer and more useful than Untappd, but the user base (and beer database) is still tiny...
@beersofmastodon

The left two columns are menus, the rest of the canvas are choices for the malty category, similarly sized grids exist for hoppy, fruity, spicy. No yeasty....

When reading about the aroma and flavor of beer, specific compounds or processes are named that are responsible for hop aroma, fermentation by-products and all kinds of aging effects. For off-flavors idem. For the typical malt derived flavor, though, this is rarely seen. Why?

I created the magazine DMV Beer over on dmv.pub for beer news and events. So if you're in the DMV area, check it out and post stuff! I'll do more over the weekend... as I'll be headed to work in about an hour and a half.

You can visit it at https://dmv.pub/m/DMVBeer or follow it via Mastodon at @DMVBeer

I see a couple of Ottawa hits among the 2024 World Beer Cup winners:

Tooth & Nail Brewing has a saison-style beer called "Valor" that picked up a gold for that category.

Also local Flora Hall Brewing picked up a silver for their "English Ordinary Bitter." Notable in a contest with global participation.

I'm a fan of both of those styles, so hope to try them over the course of the summer if they keep making them. I frequent T&N but have yet to try Flora Hall's wares.

This wall of historical craft beer from a southern Oregon museum was captivating. Especially their designs, which felt unfamiliar. And the names. Beer names are weird.

Saw a dream last night where I woke up in a slight hangover and heard from my friends that I was partying with them and actually drinking the whole night. I had been having some special sparkling wine that a customer offered and found good strong imperial stouts in a local pub.

I was horrified. Why did I do that?

I woke up, this time really woke up, feeling groggy, grabbed my phone, checked my long forgotten Untappd account.

It still said: "The best 0,0% beer in the sauna. This might be my last check in, because I've decided to stop drinking poison (ethyl alcohol). I don't need to tell you why. Everyone should think why drink, NOT why not to to drink. Adiós!", dated 23. August, 2020.

Phew. Haven't had these in a while.

Drinking a Bruery Bananas - Rum Barrel-aged imperial stout with graham crackers, bananas, brown sugar, milk sugar, and Tahitian vanilla beans - 13.3%

Rum hits up front, but the beer just becomes super sweet. It's still tasty, just not something I need in a 750mL bottle

First pull of At the Märzen of Madness. Nice flavor and aroma with just the right amount of bittering. Head retention is a bit weak, but other than that it's damned fine. There's a 1/2 barrel of it so it'll be on tap for a while.
Fermented 3 weeks, lagered for 3.5 months, keg conditioned for 2 additional months. This is time well spent.

Monday night & in Moorpark, CA. Haven’t played Obsession aka Downton Abbey the since the before times. It’s heavy on the theme & a bit too random for the tight fan. If you immerse yourselves in the theme it flows nicely. Keep the matriarch of the family at hand to kick out those unwanted guests! But only once they are of no further use!
Quacks with expansion and plastic bits, Not Alone, Cosmic Encounter, & Incan Gold hit the other tables.

I needed a sketch of the brewing process that I could freely use, that is aimed at a general audience and that serves as a "short summary" from which any one of the elements can be discussed in more detail.

I came up with this, and I'd appreciate any feedback! Note: of course this would be accompanied by text in practical use.

Anchor, America's first and oldest craft brewer, is to close. The business started in San Francisco in 1896 and survived the city's earthquake and the prohibition era. “The stake through the heart of Anchor was the pandemic,” company spokesperson Sam Singer told the New York Times. Here's a look at Anchor's long history and sad demise.

Sitting at Bräugier Brewpub in I am reminded that, at least sometimes, bars are very similar community hubs than the German "Eckkneipe" used to be. The audience is different for sure and even inflation corrected it is more expensive. But the vibe and feel is very similar. The inclusions and exclusions of people are just different.

Let me take some time to share a little about myself. That’s right, it’s time. By day, I’m in senior leadership of a based 3PL, love the logistics industry! I typically use these type of platforms as an escape and share my hobbies: (mine is in my bio), and . I’m also a father to a 5 year old, so there will be some family talk and venting too! Looking forward to the fucture connections.

Braupakt: Two giants at it together, Weihenstephan and St Bernardus.

The Weizen yeast is obvious, with clove and banana dominating the aroma. Also some biscuit, citrus and hay. It's golden and crystal clear, with a stable white head. Effervescent, rather sweet, with a good dose of hop bitters.

Very well balanced. A good mix of the styles, with both very recognizable. Nice experiment!

When two top shelf wild fermenters get at it together, it's hard to go wrong.

Boerenerf, from the Senne Valley, and Nevel, from Nijmegen, created Wild Borders.

Citrus, hay and funk in the nose. On top of that some grass in the flavor. Moderate acidity. Green apple finish. 🍻
