I think I might have a bad influence on my coworkers, quite some time ago I started calling every women I didn't remember the name of Tante (aunt) and every man I don't remember the name of Onkel (uncle) and somehow it's spread, and I caught my manager telling me "I'll have to send it over to the auntie" :p
Indians do this, too, because (IIRC) #Hindi (as well as many Indic languages, like #Persian) has specific names for mother's/father's brother/sister, so they call any older man or woman by the English "auntie/uncle."
I am curious to know what fonts people are using for the Devanagari script. I want good #hindi rendering. Please don't suggest fonts which use a character map to render Latin characters as Devanagari characters.
Suggestions for other #indian language fonts are also appreciated. Thanks!
A few #KuzhaliManickavel stories have been moving into Indian languages recently. Novelist Hansda Sowvendra Shekar translated "Paavai" (from Manickavel's 1st collection, Insects Are Just Like You and Me Except Some of Them Have Wings) & published it in #Hindi in #VanmaliKatha last month, and Appadurai Muttulingam has a #Tamil translation of "The Statue Game" in #Andhimazhai.

In RTI response ministry gives no reason for renaming wellness centres
An RTI application to the health ministry and the National Health Authority seeking the basis of the decision to change the name of Ayushman Bharat-Health and Wellness Centres to Arogya Mandirs got tossed around between them for two months, and when the ministry finally responded it gave no rationale for the name change.
I will refer to IPC only as IPC even after it gets replaced with new law named in Hindi, says Madras High Court judge Anand Venkatesh
The judge tells the lawyers present in his court hall that he does not know Hindi and therefore it would be difficult to pronounce the new names properly.
I really love this song “Kaali Shirt Waleyaa” by Simran Raj. She has a great voice and the song is quite delightful. I’m curious what it’s about, but can’t seem to get online translators to help me.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar snaps at DMK’s Baalu for seeking English translation of his speech at INDIA leaders meet
Asserting that Hindi was the national language, Nitish Kumar reportedly launched a tirade against English which he said was imposed by the British; some later speakers switched to English after his outburst.
"Nine factory workers were killed, including six women, and three others were injured in an explosion at a fire factory ..." A fire factory?
Later, "... he blast occurred on Sunday morning while the boosters ..." Is this maybe a rocket factory that is part of India's successful space program?
The article is in an English-language publication by a Turkish agency, so perhaps not shocking. Any #Hindi or #Turku speakers want to comment?
The #TYPO3#CodeOfConduct is short and sweet at 157 words — and available in 17 languages. 🇺🇳 More translations are very welcome! (Contact me if you want to add one.) https://typo3.org/coc
'Against Constitution': Madras Bar Association Objects To Hindi Names For Bills Replacing IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act
The Madras Bar Association has passed a resolution raising objection against the renaming of IPC, Indian Evidence Act and CrPC in Hindi. The Association has taken objection to the names "Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill", "Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill", "Bharatiya Sakshya Bill", for the Bills which seek to replace the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act respectively.
In accusing me of "comprehension problems," you conveniently sidestepped my actual question, the thrust of which was:
Why is it against the Constitution of India for its legislature to use #Hindi names for legislative bills when Hindi has been enshrined in Article 343(1) of the Constitution and ratified by all states in 1950 for exactly this purpose as an official language?
The question is about the #LEGAL basis on which #Madras Bar Association passed resolution against Hindi

Interview: Prof Ganesh Devy on attempts to distort history and his battle to preserve it
Eminent linguist and historian Prof. Ganesh Devy spoke to The Federal during his recent visit to Chennai for a discussion on the book, 'Indians: histories of a civilisation'.
In this freewheeling chat, the historian talks about this book of which he is one of the editors; he also touches upon the central government's attempts at rewriting history and on the imposition of Hindi. Placing Tamil language's heritage in the global context, Prof Devy argues why the BJP government's approach towards language is dangerous and needs to be countered.
Article 343(1) of the Constitution of #India (adopted in 1950) says #Hindi is an official language of the Union.
Who is rewriting history?
Why go back only 12000 years or only 15000 years? Why not go back to the time man was a monkey and grunts were the natural language?
