Hey Chinese-language friends!

So I wrote a funny sentence the other day:

我找红线 。可是我有黑线。不好啊!

Apparently 黑线 (black thread) is a colloquial expression that means "a feeling of speechlessness or frustration" and when I looked up Pleco, it says that it has something to do with the Cultural Revolution. Man, I went to deep places with that sentence lol.

Asking Chinese Mastodon - does black thread really mean this in the Chinese context?

Since it came up several times at #pyconus, I thought I’d post here. The method I’ve been using to learn Spanish (and liking quite a bit), is Comprehensible Input.

A good starting point for finding information about CI, and finding materials in your target language is Compehensible Input Wiki

For Spanish, I started with Dreaming Spanish

I finally figured out a uvular trill!!!

“You can’t learn new phonemes as an adult” is a lie.

I mean, I was already sure of that, because my Spanish pronunciation wasn’t always this good, but I couldn’t say for absolute certain which sounds in Spanish and Japanese I didn’t have as a child. (Some sounds that are in Spanish but not English are in Rusyn, which was occasionally spoken in my house.)

But I DEFINITELY could not make a uvular trill a week ago.

This is a very specific question, but here goes:

People that have experienced language attrition of their native language, how difficult was it to relearn your language? And do you have any tips on how to overcome mental blocks and other challenges with it?

If you are learning a new language in general, which techniques work best for you that I can try?

Currently I speak my native language very poorly (about A2 level), but English pretty much fluently. I'm taking lessons and I know native fluent speakers IRL, but it really is a struggle.

BRAIN ASPLODE!

I've never been able to spell "guarantee" correctly on the first try, and today I really looked at it to try to figure out why.

Which is when I realized that the opening "guar" sounds really close to "war" if you are someone who regularly says GUAO or GUËY.

Which is when I realized that a GUARANTEE is the SAME DAMN THING as a WARRANTY.

SAME. DAMN. WORD.

Fifty fucking years on this planet it took me to figure that out, ffs.

If oppa (오빠) can be used on a romantic setting. Should that mean that nuna (누나) can be an option, if the woman is older than the man ? 🤔 #Korean #LanguageLearning

I’ve noticed that I am not really passionate about anything in life. I like a lot of things, but nothing lights me up. Trying to figure out if I somehow haven’t tried THE hobby yet. How do people find out what they like?

I’d like to do some but don’t know which one. Japanese, Korean, or Mandarin. My brain keeps yelling: ALL OF THEM.

I’m thinking of doing a course. Probably in-person more so than an online one.

I’m slowly easing back into reading.

Am continuing my practice of typing out Chinese words and using them in proper sentences. I suspect I'm able to do this only because I have a foundation in Mandarin, and have intermediate listening skills. So a lot of my sentences are based on instinct not on remembering grammatical rules. I plug what I write in ChatGPT/Copilot to check if they're right.
They keep saying I am.
I am feeling suss lol.
Anyway #Mandarin folks, do we say 风很大 ? (It's windy) It feels odd.

I haven't really found great use cases for ChatGPT for myself until now, but I did some experimenting with #LanguageLearning (specifically #Chinese), and it's actually quite helpful!
I'll share some examples in this thread!

My broken and tired old lady brain has finally, mostly, gotten the hang of basic hiragana (pls don't ask me about how the katakana is going lol).

So now ofc the lessons in Genki have added kanji and my brain is struggling hard.

Hiragana at least is phonetic, sound it out... say the word. Kanji is a whoooole other thing and from what I understand it's just straight memorizing. Something I have never been good at.

It's ironic that the same people who complain about immigrants not even learning "The Language" (ie the dominant spoken language), never have the patience to talk to them for any length of time. How do people become fluent in "The Language"? By having lots of long, halting conversations in it, with people are already fluent.

I really didn't practice writing Thai. I was okay with writing short sentences on my phone. On a Thai keyboard I am still rather lost. But what really helped me write more was to be okay with my handwriting.

But isn't it so silly that I didn't enjoy writing with pen and paper just because I wrote like a kid with all the proper loops etc. However with a more adult looking handwriting I feel more comfortable haha.

Just finished reading volume 25 of Jujutsu Kaisen in Japanese! Now I have to decide if I want to wait for the next volume to release or start reading chapter by chapter until I catch up to Shounen Jump

Like with all Jujutsu Kaisen volumes I've read in Japanese, the typical Shounen battle manga power/ability discussion was very difficult to follow, but the battles themselves are easier to understand.
