I've always wondered this. Does anyone know what makes the sound in electric motors, like the low whirring sound of a fan when you turn it on? As I understand it the electricity goes through the coiled wires and creates electromagnetism, which causes the motion. So does the sound come from the electricity moving through the wires, or by the vibration of the magnets or something? Can someone good with electronics jump in and let me know?

Dear ,

Has anyone stumbled upon a # Python library that makes building Markdown tables easier?

Ideally, someone has a queryset -> markdown table or a nice hack.

🤔 I know how to write one, but every time I think I might need one, I wonder if someone has addressed this need yet?

For creative out there:

What would you name a variable that holds 1 byte?

"byte" is a reserved word since ES3. Variables cannot start with a digit, so "8bits" isn't valid.

"data", "unit", or "num" could work, although less descriptive.

Capitalizing the first character as "Byte"? IMO, looks funny and might break convention.

A homonym? "bite".

For whatever reason, my brain is refusing to cooperate with me today.

Biggest adjustment I've had to make so far with using a fountain pen is the boot time.

Also: I need to source notepads with better paper.

I think i'm on the cusp of re-building my website. The look will be the same and it will still use , however I've duct-taped so many things on top of each other it's hard to expand on.

Is there a good start with all the modern goodness (webmentions, SEO, social images etc) built in?

Does the human body lose "immunity" to germs/etc without exposure to them? E.g. if you've been more isolated (as we have been during the pandemic), are you more likely to get sick from being exposed to other peoples "germs"?

(I suppose I should probably do some lookup on my own first before asking 😅 )

What, in your opinion and experience, is a very good external battery for travel? I have one but it's quite old and needs to be replaced.

I want to tell my students to convert human-friendly column names ("Weekly Rate") into computer-friendly names (weekly_rate), but think they should also maintain the human-friendly names as attributes. I know there's Hmisc::label(); does anyone have other suggestions for R packages/frameworks supporting this kind of functionality? (I've also occasionally found that Hmisc::labels() attributes will cause odd errors, although of course I don't have a reprex right now ...)

Man, Postman is really obnoxious these days. Any recommendations for which of the many alternatives are any good? Ideally open source, no cloud bollocks, and if it could import an existing Postman collection that would be a bonus. Going to give Bruno a go.

OK, I am going to pull a move and ask everyone: What is your favorite side with a salmon dish? My partner picked up some really fancy butter and I am going to cook a Dijon herb butter baked salmon, probably with a salad using Parmesan and lemon dressing. I feel like it needs a starch or something though.

Any ideas?

It's not the survey report, but is possibly in a similar space?

Dear

my VPS provider shuts down its product end of May, so the machine I have since 2007 will be gone soon and I have to look for an alternative. Any recommendations?

My priorities are these:

  • chances of the new provider shutting down my machine in the next years is extremely low
  • I can install Arch GNU/Linux because I'm used to it and low maintenance time is key
  • enough CPU power & RAM that compiling normal-sized projects is feasible (i.e., compiling is a must but compiling is not)
  • located in the
  • at least 150 GB SSD but the more, the better
  • at most 30€/month

Thanks!

I am still looking to buy "simple" cards that support at least 32 kB (that's kilobyte, not kilobit) as NDEF. So a simple NFC Forum Type 4 chip on a card. The only source I can find ATM is https://identbase.de/rfid-karte-nxp-mifare-desfire-ev2-32k-idb-tech-card-08594.html?pn=24 So dear — anyone know of other sources where I can buy, say, 10 of them and get them ideally in the next few days? And maybe even with something else than a NXP chip? Thx!
