:skull360: We have now successfully upgraded to v4.3.0-alpha.3+mementomods-2024-05-26. The server has Mastodon Bird UI 2.0.0rc37 installed with no further changes at this time in the UI.
The branch is now synced and up-to-date and 158 commits ahead from the last version 2024-05-01.
I love running the newest version so I can test ahead in production for the upcoming Mastodon Bird UI versions. I do have my local instance with the production db, but it is far more fun this way and it feels good to have new things.
This "testing in live" is also because it's the perfect way to make sure that I can help contributing to Mastodon and spot bugs before they end up in the final rc, beta or stable versions. There most probably will be some minor bugs, but the earlier we tackle them the better.
As usual, please tell me about any strange things you may encounter with this Mastodon version. We're running bleeding edge after all.
I hope you enjoy your time here. Feel free to send me a message if you have anything in mind. :bunhdheart:
Boy, I have not gotten this many reports on people on my server in some time. (carry on folks on my server, no violations here... but everyone is reporting everyone they disagree with on Gaza and Israel left and right...). #MastoAdmin
Thanks to some sleuthing/fixing by @derickr (we were on a bugged ImageMagick version), if your phone was 500'ing on image uploads, that problem should be gone now on phpc.social. Please report 'em if you still see them! #mastoadmin
I was looking for a project that would let me manage my Mastodon follows & followers better. Haven't found anything but did come across Mastodon+Steampipe. If you know of something, @ me
Can say that my #Cloudflare#R2 block storage for #Mastodon is massively growing. A year ago it was stable at ~80-89Gb, but lately it's heading to 200Gb+ #Mastoadmin
Weekend is here so, now the 'No tomes Available' Sidekiq errors are starting to appear like clockwork as businesses that use their services do backups over the weekend put strain on Backblaze B2B and #Backblaze throttles available connections dynamically across their system.
Joy Joy for low-cost media storage of a #MastoAdmin. We get what we pay for. Luckily, for me, most of that media is from the Fediverse firehouse.
Really wish we could turn off Preview images, esp self-hosts
For the first time the #CoSocialCa Mastodon server has started to struggle just a little bit to keep up with the flow of the Fediverse.
We’ve usually been “push” heavy but we’ve started to see some spikes in “pull” queue latency. The worst of these spikes was today, where we fell behind by at least a couple minutes for most of the afternoon.
We have the capacity to run 40 workers (following the change I made last week, documented earlier in this thread.)
We have fairly huge backlog of pull queue jobs.
Why aren’t we running every available worker to clear this backlog? 🤔
It might be necessary to designate some threads specifically for the pull queue in order to keep up with whatever is going on here, but I am open to suggestions.
While my original proposal to hide images in order to highlight the importance of well-written alt text did not gain a whole lot of traction, I'm still glad there was some conversation, and grateful to everyone who is still interested in joining in.
If you do participate, I would love to hear from you!
What should an Admin, or if you're an Admin, what do you do, about someone's post that contains unnecessary extreme profanities attacking a well-known person?
Aside from relays and adding elastic search to a mastodon instance does anyone have any other things they do to enhance the user experience? #mastoadmin
I've received my first "report" on hugs.lgbt and I'm very confused ....
Two posts were reported ... neither were from hugs.lgbt posts ... one was a reply to one of my posts by a mutual, the other was a post by that mutual without any hugs.lgbt involvement ...
Did I receive the report because one of those was a reply to a post of mine?
But why the other one?
Also very confused as to why ... the first was a thank you reply to a post from me.
The other was a meme.
The category was "other" but no notes or any other information that I could discern 🤔 🤷♂️
for a year and a half, images from mstdn.social have been unloadable on my instance
pings and traceroutes to mstdn.social from inside of my network die right at the router:
Request timeout for icmp_seq 4
92 bytes from 192.168.0.1: Destination Port Unreachable
Vr HL TOS Len ID Flg off TTL Pro cks Src Dst
4 5 00 5400 178b 0 0000 3f 01 1e6d 192.168.0.200 116.202.14.219
no changes i made on my network fixed it, and i began to suspect my isp had blocked the ip
............
................
............ it turns out, my ipv6 was disabled and mstdn.social needs it for its cdn 😭
Backblaze was down for me for around the last 10 minutes as of this post
Edit: It's still down. Status.backblaze.com has no issues
Sidekiq errorL Aws::S3::Errors::ServiceUnavailable: Service temporarily unavailable, please try again
Images were blank but seem back now

I'm having issues they can't resolve lately. B2B doesn't play nice with Mastodon. Any good, reasonably priced alternatives? Refer-a-friend links won't insult me
🤓🚨 16-hours after I reported the #BackBlaze US East outage/disruptions after thousands of S3 errors in SideKiq, Backblaze confirms there are ongoing issues. #MastoAdmin#BackblazeB2
