It will never not be shocking to me how many people there are in this world who think there is any possible justification or defense for killing someone because they were yelling at you that they were hungry and thirsty.
If thought this was OK to do on a train in , what did he think it was OK to do while carrying a gun overseas for the U.S. Marines?
say his name.

Yesterday I finished reading "Hope: A Tragedy." Last night I watched my neighbor remove a homeless woman he found sleeping on his front steps. Today I read Jordan Neely's last words.
"I don't have food, I don't have a drink, I'm fed up. I don't mind going to jail and getting life in prison. I'm ready to die."

We have to ask ourselves, if the situation had been reversed, and the victim had the perpetrator in a headlock, would the other people have intervened? I think we know the answer to that.

“Abigail Addison from Canarsie, Brooklyn:
"I could see he was really holding really tight, and who was there to help him? No one helped. People need to stop being scared and stand up.”

NYC Schools Handcuff and Haul Away Kids in Emotional Crisis

Despite a pledge to stop relying on police to deal with students who have mental health episodes, New York City schools have continued to call 911 on kids in distress thousands of times a year, an investigation by @THECITY and ProPublica found.

So, this guy solicited nude videos from an undercover police officer he believed to be a minor in 2018. It took nearly five years to convict him and (apologies but I’m going to use all caps here) HE REMAINED AN ACTIVE DUTY NYPD OFFICER UP TO HIS CONVICTION THIS WEEK. In the press release, the NYPD goes on and on about how he betrayed his oath but they don’t seem bothered with letting him keep his badge for years after he did.

Hey, this is handy if you live in :

https://boundaries.beta.nyc

"The NYC Boundaries Map is a tool for viewing and querying overlapping administrative boundaries in NYC."

Give it an address and (example: https://boundaries.beta.nyc/?addr=370+JAY+STREET%2C+Brooklyn%2C+11201 ) it'll tell you which districts it's in for 12+ different slices, e.g., police precinct, Community District (which Community Board covers it), etc.

How long could blue states last without the divine stewardship of red states? A whole hell of a lot longer than Kevin Sorbo's "career."

Come to think of it, a blue nation with sensible gun control, excellent public schools, bodily autonomy, Ben & Jerry's, and no Kevin Sorbo or Ted Cruz sounds.... AMAZING.

"Operating robotaxis in SF has become a litmus test for business viability. If it can work here, there's little doubt it can work just about everywhere,"

Anderson Map Co., an underappreciated map maker based in NY that made the most astounding, labor intensive cartography that documented not just the region but the architecture.

The maps would be hand drawn, building by building, sourced from photos, & then compiled & photoed together to create these amazing 3D, almost birds eye view, maps. Anderson was a significant figure in this futuristic style that brought such fine detail. Here, part of his Manhattan map from 1965.

A detail from Anderson's map of Manhattan, here centered on the Chrysler Building and its neighbors.

Had a blast doing some live listening/tuning/testing w Shortwave Collective for the 2023 Open Hardware Summit in NYC last night.

I was nestled between car bonnet, bins & bushes of North London with my DIY radio receiver + trusty pencil/razor diode combo at the helm… Attempting to use this beautiful old sign as my antenna…

@ShortwaveCollective

A really impressive black and white metal sign from the 1930’s for the Smithfield Refrigerator Works in London. The huge sign sits above an alley and is semi-attached to an Victorian pub built in 1890. Tinysound was trying to use this sign as an antenna extension for her radio receiver. The sign also has a huge tree shading it.

It's a failure of local government and a complete lack of vision for what a walkable and safe city should be that, 10 years on from vision zero, this type of article is still being written.

The city seems to prefer boasting about catching people jumping over turnstiles than keeping cars from killing pedestrians.
