I knew my hometown, a fairly liberal place in a relatively liberal state of California and the state capital, had a #sheriff sharing out-of-state license plate data.
It's almost impossible to control sheriffs in most states because they are elected and answer to no one.

A #White man who “hated #Black people” killed 3 people after opening fire at a Dollar General store in #Jacksonville, FL, the local sheriff said Sat. The #shooter is also dead.
“Plainly put, this shooting was racially motivated, & he hated Black people,” #Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said at a Saturday evening news conference.
