Toronto police data only capture a small portion of the cyclist and pedestrian injuries that happen in the city each year, according to a new peer reviewed study from York University researchers 🚘 🚶♀️🚴♀️ #WalkTO#BikeTO#SlowDown#DriveTO
January is the month that carries it with a lot of recommendations for ways to pack more into your life, to "improve" your life and yourself. This post on my personal blog goes the other direction. https://biketoworkbarb.blogspot.com/2024/01/slow-down.html
white people sometimes flip out when we are told something or someone we know or love is actually racist.
we’re conditioned to think of racism as jerks in white robes only, so the gut level emotional dissonance can be shocking and upsetting when our eyes are opened to other layers of racism we were blind to. especially if it’s in something we have positive emotions about.
our work is to learn to observe that reaction within us without kneejerking to denial or being dismissive
@Snowshadow@violetmadder@Greenseer@seachanger I'm taking a class that includes a lot of info about how we process new information. In which I've learned that what people do with this new info, once 'the bubble bursts' is not the same for everyone, sadly. We prioritise the new info, based on risk, liklihood, etc ... & some may file it in the trash bin even before it hits conscious processing. 😢
It explains a lot about Jordan Klepper's interviews with MAGAts.
CEO of Global #RoadSafety Partnership and former assistant commissioner of Road Policing David Cliff said any crash at more than 30 km/h increases the likelihood of serious harm.
The social cost of crashes is $10B a year. Lowering the speed limit would save lives AND money!
Life is often best when it is #simple, #easy, and #effortless. Take this as an example: I get very little of the outside world when I drive a #car (which I consider to be a rather complex matter) and much more when I ride a #bicycle. However, I get the maximum when I simply #walk (which is undoubtedly the simplest of the three). #unlearn#slowdown#backtoperfection
Is there any concept as weird as "carbon budget" or "methane budget"?
I mean, budget?
We're overdrawn already.
We draw this line: "We can fuck it up this much more and no more," and we "budget" up to that line.
Makes my head ache.
It's fucked up enough already. The time to cut back is now. #ClimateChange#energy#slowdown
