"Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative #IPCC, foresee at least 2.5C of global heating, while almost half anticipate at least 3C (5.4F). Only 6% thought the internationally agreed 1.5C (2.7F) limit would be met.
Many of the scientists envisage a “semi-dystopian” future, with famines, conflicts and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods and storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck."
"A sense of despair is understandable, but it robs us of our agency, makes us vulnerable to mis- and disinformation, and prevents the radical collaboration we need.
But we are on the brink of positive societal #Tipping#Points. I believe that the children of children born this year will be the first fossil-fuel-free generation in modern history."
According to National Geographic, Americans have hated tipping almost as long as they've been doing it. Here's the story of the practice's origins, the debate around whether racism made it more widespread in the U.S., and what people are tipping for today.
“When paying, you are presented with the option of leaving a tip, no different than pretty much any other interaction with a point-of-sale payment system. But it poses an interesting question—and one we will increasingly be required to answer as the domain of #automation continues to expand:”
$19.00 haircut. I when checking out, tipping suggestions start at $7.00.
USians, is that about right? I asked something similar in a poll a while back. Responses were all over the place. I am cheap, but I also recognize that people need to get paid what they’re worth. This place is now double the price of when I started here. At one time it was $9.00 and I would round to $10 or just over 10%. But I just tipped $4.00 which is just over 20%. So confused. #tipping
We don't tip in Australia. Hardly at all — maybe round-off or add a bit extra for exceptional service. We know that in places like the USA, "tipping culture" is an ugly power-trip with its roots in racism and abuse of workers. We have regulations about minimum wages and worker rights. We expect restaurant owners to pay their workers.
There's a couple of other points worth noting about sources for the article:
Restaurant terminal provider, Zeller, supplies point-of-sale equipment such as EFTPOS machines. Their website says: "Zeller Tipping Trends Report 2023 shows Australians are tipping more generously amidst economic challenges". Their data shows that tipping has grown 12% year-on-year. https://www.myzeller.com/about/press/zeller-tipping-trends-report-2023
The Australian Foodservice Advocacy Body is not there to support the typical restaurant and hospitality worker. The board and advisors are nearly all middle-aged white men, and the organisation was founded by a bunch of mega-corporations that you'd recognise as big brands in supermarkets.
I think it's safe to say the Australian Foodservice Advocacy Body is being misleading, and trying to hype tipping culture in Australia to increase income for big business.
A model predicts that #marine cloud brightening would reduce the risk of some disastrous changes in the climate, but could also have some negative consequences'
The huge ocean current known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC - not the Gulf Stream!) shifts vast amount of water around the world. But scientists fear that by heating the planet and melting the Greenland ice-sheet, we're already slowing it down, with the risk that it could collapse - a potential tipping...
Let's get this straight... I'm supposed to #tip my Apple Genius - who works inside in the air conditioning and makes well over min. wage, but no one is complaining that the majority of grocery stores forbid #tipping the person who helps you unload your groceries into your car, takes the cart back, and works in literally 100°F (37°C) heat in Florida to gather up carts of people who are too shitty to care where they leave them? 😳
@paul#Tipping culture is out of control in the 🇺🇸. We were all tipping generously during #Covid so that stores wouldn’t go out of business, and to compensate for no dining in at restaurants, but that’s over now, and it has to stop. ✋
Tipping is an excuse for employers to underpay their workers — which I highly doubt is the case at Apple. It should be the exception, rather than the rule, as it is in Europe (you only tip if service is truly excellent).
