Today 11th May, members of @scientifiques_en_rebellion@ScientistRebellion joined the protest against a project of a mega-pond in the Puy-De-Dôme, to denounce water grabing #NoBassaran. We urge public authorities to urgently redirect agriculture towards more water-efficient and local practices
"Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative #IPCC, foresee at least 2.5C of global heating, while almost half anticipate at least 3C (5.4F). Only 6% thought the internationally agreed 1.5C (2.7F) limit would be met.
Many of the scientists envisage a “semi-dystopian” future, with famines, conflicts and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods and storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck."
Von den # Agrarsubventionen sind 45 von 55 Mrd. € dazu da, um die #CO2Emissionen hoch zu halten. Die #Landwirtschaft in der #EU verursacht 400 Mio. Tonnen #CO2.
Der Anbau von #ökologischem Gemüse mit höchsten Qualitätsstandards würde nur einen Bruchteil an CO2 erzeugen.
Both the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (#IPCC) and The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (@ipbes) agree: urgent, bold action is needed to fix humanity’s relationship with nature.
This month's Global Resources Outlook Report highlights the systemic shifts in energy, food, mobility, and urban planning that are essential to bend the trend for the well-being of all: https://www.unep.org/resources/Global-Resource-Outlook-2024
This week in our first-year course on #ClimateChange at #UVic we're looking at climate impacts and what can be done to mitigate or adapt to them. I like this figure from the #IPCC AR6 WGIII report.
Which branches of this tree do you think we'll follow?
For the first time in recorded history, the 180-day running mean for the global surface temperature just crossed 1.70°C above the pre-industrial 1850-1900 #IPCC baseline.
Scientists including the #IPCC have long warned that climate change makes wildfires escalate out of control. #ChileBurns
New study shows: “Favored by extreme weather conditions, fire activity has dramatically risen in recent years in this Andean country.”
The Austrian 🇦🇹 climate-science community is writing a national #Climate#Assessment Report (#AAR2) following the process & structure of the #IPCC - and at @uniinnsbruck, we're hiring an #earlycareer researcher to support the co-chairs & authors!
> A report released in 2014 by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( #IPCC ), for example, estimated a range of 3.7 to 110 grams of CO2 equivalent per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
> It's long been assumed that nuclear plants generate an average of 66 grams of CO2/kWh — though Wealer believes the actual figure is much higher. New power plants, for example, generate more CO2 during construction than those built in previous decades, due to stricter safety regulations. #BenWealer
Schon in seinem Bericht von 1995 warnte der dank Konsensverfahren sehr vorsichtige Weltklimarat #IPCC in seiner Zusammenfassung für Entscheidungsträger:
"Several models indicate an increase in precipitation intensity, suggesting a possibility for more extreme rainfall events."
The world must get onto the blue path: cut greenhouse gas emissions in half over the next seven years!
That is what “keeping 1.5° alive” means. #IPCC
And we must limit warming to 1.5° to avert a planetary scale disaster.
All countries agreed to that 2015 in Paris. #COP28
Today I'm at #ESA's #ESRIN site for the joint European Commission - ESA Earth System Science Initiative, representing @PolarRES + @OceanIceEU today and tomorrow in plenary talks.
The topic: how to better use Earth Observation data with #ClimateModels to understand the Earth System. It's a big topic but one I've been working on for some years.
First some input from #CMIP on the next intercomparison for the #IPCC - #CMIP7
1: How Scientists From the “Global South” Are Sidelined at the IPCC
'For most people, tackling #climatechange will bring multiple benefits, from affordable housing to secure employment. But for those few of us who have disproportionately benefited from the status quo, it means a profound reduction in how much energy we use & stuff we accumulate'!
The Q, is will we change voluntarily or will we wait it out & be forced to radically shift our behaviour by the accelerating #ClimateCrisis?
