Alright. Here's how it is. Once you appoint yourself as gatekeeper, you become part of the problem. We as people have precious few allies as it is, without actively alienating the ones we have. You can stand up and offer to help, stand up and provide constructive feedback on how to improve, stand up and show appreciation, or just sit your ungrateful self down. Just stop. Thanks @stefan for raising awareness of . https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112451222240570433

JEkis,

@stefan It occurrs to me that the hall of fame is not run by a or person because in the decades that alt text has been a thing, nobody from within this community has stopped to think that demonstrating how to do it well might be helpful for our cause. When an ally does it, we treat them like an intruder. Whatever. Enjoy your internet full of suboptimal alt text.

So I've been called out for https://alttexthalloffame.org not being run by someone who's #blind or #VisionImpaired.

And that's fair. I'm very much open to anyone from those communities to get directly involved, so this is my public invitation.

Never occurred to me, as I'm privileged, but it makes sense. Time isn't something anyone can actually "see" anyway, so nobody can be "blind" to it. What happens with ADHD (& with other neurodivergences too, I assume, I just don't know which ones) is that we don't perceive the passage of

@gabriel @bookstodon Caveat before I give my opinion: you’re allowed to love what you love. My opinion is NOT a personal attack.

I loathed it. I felt that the book was an attack on my personally and on “my people”, those with albinism and vision impairment. The blind protag’s upbringing was also abusive. For more (review NOT an essay) see this link https://www.darkmatterzine.com/illustrating-doerrs-on-albinism/.

Accessible cycling: Anyone out there who uses a bike as mobility aid? Either standard bikes, or adaptive ones (recumbent, semi-recumbent, adult trikes, tandem, hand bike,…).

We’ve had fantastic experience with the Hase Pino semi-recumbent tandem.

Mulling over adult trike options for my mom, who’s starting to have balance issues.

Tactile Patch Sheets are a 3D printed design vocabulary to help vision impaired people more easily dial in synthesizer patches on hardware synths.

I started this work two years ago and was finally able to get everything written up, and all the files created, tested and uploaded.

Everything about this work is open-source and BSD licensed.

Would be nice if TUI applications showed what they look like
I'm not installing something without seeing a screenshot of it

Another problem is accessibility, I can't imagine how many TUI applications are invisible to vision-impaired users, does ncurses even have a solution for this?

TTYs are super cool, but do we do we still need to encode all information as a matrix of characters?

Whilst are the easiest to do, I do wish most applications would at the very least support output and at least he somewhat useable on a braille screen and/or with TTS.

#AltText is only for people who can't see properly, they say.

A short and concise alt-text that's reduced to what really matters within the context of a post is enough, they say.

Non-sense, I say. And so do others.

There's more than enough justification for giving full and detailed #ImageDescriptions including #transcripts of everything written in them and explanations of things which your audience may not know or understand otherwise.

Here are some excerpts from another #Mastodon thread (https://mastodon.social/@KydiaMusic/110777644794322792):

A gentle reminder that this is Disability Pride Month—a perfect time to get into the habit of adding ALT text to any pictures you post. There are many sight-impaired individuals who would appreciate it, and even those with excellent vision sometimes need clarity on what is going on in a picture, or what is significant about it. ALT text is also a great opportunity to add more context, humor, or commentary.

@KydiaMusic And if you're an aspiring writer, it's a great chance to work on your skills!

This also goes for screenshots of text. Screen readers see them as images, which means they can't read them. So yep, that means you've gotta type them all out. Sorry, even the long ones.

@KydiaMusic Another benefit of ALT text is that you may be waiting for a slower instance to update an older image, but the ALT-text will let you know if you really need to wait, but telling you what the image is.

@KydiaMusic I love alt-text, it's a brilliant feature. It's not only useful to people with screen readers but it's a fun place to be creative and add additional commentary about the image that otherwise wouldn't fit within your instance's character limit.
