I have mixed feelings about the death of the 27" iMac. As someone who likes to swap out both frequently, I've never been a fan of tethering the display to the CPU. But it was arguably the best Mac for development for a number of years. User upgradable RAM, great display and a decent config was “affordable" (at least as much as any Mac is).

IMO the Studio is a better replacement, unless Apple jacks up the M3 price. But would like to see some Apple monitors that aren't full of compromises.

Bryan,
@Bryan@macaw.social avatar

@paul I think the Studio Display is top notch. I prior had the LG 5K monitor and it was cheap plastic junk. About a year into owning the LG the display plug got loose and it suffered from disconnect/reconnect over and over. Terrible display.

    Hi, I'm stuck waiting on laundry to finish and am bored, so why don't I come on here and write some hot takes about YouTube?

    I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.

    Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

    Bryan,
    @Bryan@macaw.social avatar

    @TechConnectify

    IMHO YouTube needs to break out music - I don’t need or want it. I already have Apple Music (or friends of mine have Spotify) and it makes YouTube Premium feel like monopoly leveraging of YouTube to get more music subscribers.

    It’s a gross abuse and I won’t be part of it.

    Sometimes I encounter videos on tiktock/tumblr: "wealth attractors" -reblog it & get good luck with $. At first I'm disgusted. Crass displays of wealth are ugly-- then I'm struck by how modest these dreams of 'wealth' really are.

    It's always like ... just a few thousand dollars ... never even close to the obscene sums that distort our world. "root canal money" not "buy a supreme court justice" money.

    I'm doing OK for now. But, I remember when $500 could have changed everything.

    A young woman with long wavy dark hair obscures her face with a fan of $100 US bills. "my aura is like a money magnet i never go negative"
    View of a Chanel shopping bag and a designer purse resting on the passenger seat of a car. In the foreground a manicured hand with red nail polish clutches a bunch of US cash of various denominations. Some $20 bills have purple bank bands that read $2000. There are also $20s and $50s in rubber bands.
    Another manicured hand with long pastel pink gel nails holds a thick wad of cash that contains at least a few $100 bills.

    Bryan,
    @Bryan@macaw.social avatar

    @futurebird I just had a root canal tooth from 22 years ago pulled. Finally failed. 😞 They did a bone graft and in about 6-9months I’ll have an implant. I was told root canals last ~17 years on average. 😖

    I’ll probably go for IONIQ 5, EV6, or EV9 once the connector is changed to work with Tesla Superchargers.

    Dude in a 2-ton pickup truck has been idling outside my office window for more than 20 minutes. Today's weather is perfect: partly cloudy, 65 degrees, light breeze. I can see no sound reason why he'd do this. I asked him if he'd consider turning off his car while he's stationary and he gave me a nasty look.

    This is probably the same climate-change-denying douche bag who complains about gas prices being too high.

    Bryan,
    @Bryan@macaw.social avatar

    @dangoodin i think calling 311 will get parking enforcement. Might want to give them a ring sometime to see if they will ticket idling vehicles. They will ticket and tow abandoned cars or vehicles blocking driveways.

    An observation:

    Many people seem to be under the impression that series hybrid drivetrains (where the ICE powerplant turns a generator which powers a motor) are superior to parallel hybrid (where the ICE can spin the wheels directly).

    I think a lot of this comes from knowledge of diesel-electric locomotives, and trains are known to be efficient. But, in fact, those trains would be even more efficient if they could parallelize the diesel engine - that's just really hard, and isn't the point.

    Bryan,
    @Bryan@macaw.social avatar

    @TechConnectify the BMW i3 with its REx "rage extender” is probably the best example of an engine tuned to just generate electricity in a car platform. Seems ~37MPG for charging mode is below what a Prius could easily get. (fwiw i've read other i3 owner reviews and this is about average for real-world usage of REx).

    Would you like a short thread on a weird internal conflict I have regarding a fairly widespread issue Hyundai/Kia E-GMP cars are having?

    That question was rhetorical. Strap in.

    OK, so my car can (in theory) charge at 48 amps. With our Freedom voltage, that's 11.5 kW. A fair number of owners are having problems charging at this speed because the charge inlet overheats.

    Now, initially, Hyundai had a very stupid strategy for this occurrence: stop charging entirely. That was awful.

    Bryan,
    @Bryan@macaw.social avatar

    @TechConnectify I do a lot of road trips and stays at hotels with free AC car charging. Many hotels have 3 hour limits on charging for high demand areas (for example the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington).

    Being able to charge at max is pretty important if you’re trying to top off in under 3 hours (or moving to different plug every 3 hours). FWIW I don’t have a Hyundai so I’m able to get the full 48amp.

    Question for people driving electric vehicles: Do you carry a portable Level 2 charger in your car, and if so, what NEMA adapters do you carry with it?

    I'm contemplating if it's worth me having something bigger than a NEMA5-20 at the front of my garage for visitors. Can't quite justify installing a fixed Level 2 charger since I don't actually have an EV myself.

    Bryan,

    @kwf I carry a portable level 2 charger with a case with every adapter. Have never used. Never. (Waste of money looking back).

    @_dm in both cases (iOS and Mac) it’s to access keys to write to the disk (at the block/fs level) to resize file systems and change bootloader target.

    The /User file system might need to be shrunk for the new OS partition to be laid down. Then the bootloader is changed to point at the new OS.

    Note (for iOS) if you don’t know the password you can still upgrade via DFU and booting from a Mac host. It will just overwrite the old OS partition with updated OS.

    Bryan,

    I think a good read is this entire website: https://support.apple.com/guide/security/welcome/web

    If you just want the boot process (and boot target details) take a look at the System Security sections starting here: https://support.apple.com/guide/security/system-security-overview-sec114e4db04/web

    It’s a pretty good system and it’s why only old iPhones can be tether-jailbroken via vulnerabilities in iboot.
