Apple fail.

Today, my Mac's available disk space keeps dropping. I keep deleting stuff and disk space keeps dropping to where applications stop working and I apparently have less than 100M left. I'm panicking a bit because I keep deleting things and it gets worse not better.

Finally, I kill time machine. I haven't deleted any more files and have not done anything since, but now I have 135G free on disk.

What the?

Bryan,
@Bryan@macaw.social avatar

@J12t
Plugin your Time Machine disk to get all the snapshots moved over (or delete the local snapshots).

Also spend some time excluding directories that maybe don’t need to be included in snapshots like ~/Downloads or ~/Library/Mail

This is my regular announcement that you need Tailscale in your life. I’m here in Korea on my iPhone but I’m watching Netflix using my Synology NAS back in Oregon as an exit node. Absolutely rock solid personal free VPN and amazing for teams and developers as well. Magical.

Bryan,
@Bryan@macaw.social avatar

@shanselman
Hit Netflix directly in Korea so you can see the content available in Korea but not available in the US. Their movie library is much more deep. Also stuff normally on Paramount+ is there. Same for Disney+. More content is available in Korea.

You probably want to leave a Raspberry Pi w/Tailscale in Korea as an exit node while back in US. 😀

I really like my and still use it all the time, but I think Apple missed the boat a bit. The Meta Raybans are a more practical face computer.

If Apple had created sunglasses that had a decent camera, Apple Music/Podcasts, and Siri built in for $300, it probably would have been a massive success.

I think Toyota was right all along.

It’s an unpopular opinion among EV purists, but I think hybrids will reduce a lot more carbon emissions than BEVs, for the simple reason that way more people can switch. Even without access to charging outlets, hybrids are far more efficient thanks to their regenerative braking. With access to outlets, they are as good as EVs within their electric range, which will account for most of the daily commutes of their owners, and all with far smaller batteries and better costs of ownership than BEVs.

The way to eliminate emissions due to personal transportation is not to put people in BEVs. It’s to eliminate commutes and massively invest in (electrified) public transportation.

“Hybrid vs. Electric Cars: Why Hybrids Make More Sense”

https://www.kbb.com/car-advice/hybrid-vs-electric-why-hybrids-make-more-sense/

Bryan,
@Bryan@macaw.social avatar

@drahardja
I’m pretty sure the carbon neutral point for an EV is so good that a hybrid is only winning in ones wallet. Basically the answer is more “it depends where the electricity comes from”. Norway or California where renewables are the main suppliers of electricity can be carbon neutral in < 10k miles. Most hybrids will burn fuel their entire lifespan.

I don't know if this is just me, but with how high our energy costs are getting, the complexity of peak vs off peak pricing is starting to seem absurd to me.

When I'm paying half a dollar per kWh, how much effort are you expecting me to put into modifying my behavior to save 3 cents?

Unpatchable vulnerability in Apple chip leaks secret encryption keys

Bryan,

The full article actually lists 3 different fixes.
Most straightforward for M1 & M2 is restricting processes that handle certain keys to the efficiency CPU’s that don’t have this cpu cache being exploited.
For the M3 a bit can be set for memory that has these keys so they can’t exist in the vulnerable cache.

This is a clickbait title being they actually disclose these fixes in the article… 😵‍💫

Personally, I don't find it funny enough to ridicule it. Even though as @parismarx notes, it really deserves to be ridiculed!

@rysiek ah the whole big corporations shouldn’t listen to laws or government orders argument. Yeah, that’s a super cool world you want there. Next you’ll be telling me Dow Chemical should just dump chemicals in a river because they don’t need to follow local laws either! Maybe Apple should have kept the Lightning connector and told EU to eat 💩?

I know… you think Apple should abandon China (one of the biggest user bases) because VPN’s have to be configured manually in the OS settings now.

All that bitterness, rage, anger, sadness, or whatever you both are going through… I’m sorry. But try to look at the positives in life.

I went to Beijing 4 times a year at Apple and I can tell you all your fellow citizens working at Apple feel the same. You of all people should know that there is little Apple can do as a foreign company in China.

In the US voting in an election is often picking between two pieces of garbage. You hold your nose and pick the least worst candidate. The same concept happens with government/business.

Arguing strongly with bureaucrats in private often works. But sometimes it doesn’t.
