Yesterday, we marked the entry into force of new EU rules to empower consumers in the green transition.

Under those rules, companies will be forbidden to make vague environmental claims, such as stating that they are ‘green’ or ‘environmentally friendly’ if
they cannot demonstrate that they truly are.

Consumers will be getting better and more harmonised information on their legally guaranteed rights and on products’ durability and reparability.

Aus leerstehenden Büros könnten laut Experten über 11.000 Wohnungen in deutschen Großstädten geschaffen werden.

Aber das kann man nicht machen, weil das würde die Städte wohnlicher machen, es würde für Dezentralisierung sorgen und damit Stress reduzieren. Insgesamt wäre das sehr gut. Einziger Haken, es wird dann alles weniger profitabel. Also machen wir das nicht.

2015 lehnten noch 13 Prozent der Männer in Deutschland eine „weiter gehende Gleichstellungspolitik“ ab, diese Gruppe ist bis 2023 auf 22 Prozent angewachsen.

Im FT-Artikel verortet der Autor den Beginn der wachsenden politischen Kluft zwischen jungen Frauen und Männern in der -Bewegung, die Frauen feministisch empowered und somit stärker ins progressive Lager bewegt habe. Die andere Seite der Analyse muss jedoch sein, dass die offene Ablehnung feministischer Ideen in den vergangenen Jahren eine große Bühne bekommen hat. Möglicherweise geht die Strategie der Antifeministen in AfD, Union und von anderer Organisationen und Personen wie beliebten, misogynen Kaberettisten auf: Sie markieren über endlos wiederholte Kritik an u.a. geschlechtergerechter Sprache immer wieder politische Gleichstellungsbemühungen als übertriebene oder bevormundende Ideen – bis dies tatsächlich in größere Ablehnung von politischen Maßnahmen umschlägt.

I just discovered Nick Huntington-Klein's "The Effect: An Introduction to Research Design and Causality" (published 2022), and I think I have to add another unread statistics textbook to my collection. https://theeffectbook.net/index.html

(The tone is non-technical/conversational, it starts with DAGs, and the code examples are in R, Python and Stata. Neat.)

Did you ever need to adjust some time series for the count of members in a given year? I did. It turned out to be quite tedious, because I wanted to allow for the fact that not all enlargements happened at the first of January (so the membership count of that year is actually a fraction), and take lap years into account. Brexit included.

  1. Clean, transform, and publish the Austrian parlament's "open-data" (persons, session transcripts) for easy analysis by anyone

  2. Slap a UI on top of the clean data to analyse things like

  • Abscences of persons
  • Interjections (tell you more about a person than speeches really...)
  • What silly signs they put up on the speakers desk
  • search speeches
  • ..

I guess not every Austrian politician will be happy
