I'm really hoping you don't need me to tell you that using machine learning ("AI") systems to identify potential targets and then to suggest that they be targeted when at home with their family members, including children, is one of the most abhorrent, unethical, inhumane things I've ever seen. Ooh, here’s a new dark pattern I’ve not seen before. Decline cookies and you get a spinner saying it may take a few minutes to set your prefs, with a large cancel button. Utter bullshit.

Seeing being mentioned, and pleased to see that our policy of non-federation still seems to be the right approach after Meta has:

  • ignored widespread anti-trans content
  • snooped on people using their VPN
  • silently filtered out "political" content from Instagram/Threads feeds

Happy with our choice to keep all that bullshit well away from our community here.

We'll link up when they bring something positive to the Fediverse. As before, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Realised (after far too long) that the cross-network chat app https://beeper.com is a proper Matrix client, and all their cross-network connections are open source Matrix bridges. I've finally given it a go, and I have to say I'm incredibly impressed. I'd recommend checking it out.

We've temporarily limited federation with mastodon.social for the next day or so, due to an influx of spam. If you follow people there, you'll still be able to see their posts, you just won't see stuff from there in the public timelines. Hopefully we will be able to remove the limit soon.

Long shot: Any #Rails devs know of a method to add a lang attribute on any text that's missing a translation, so has had to fall back to the default locale? I suspect I might need to write my own i18n backend, but I'd love to find something already out there.

I want a really simple key/value data store, which I can write to with a REST API call. Would you create a simple REST API wrapper around something like Redis/Valkey, or would you just expose the datastore directly? Or is there a really simple service that I can build something like that in? I actively want to avoid anything fancy or powerful, the fewer features the better.

I find the recent trend for burned-in subtitles on things like Youtube shorts really irritating, mainly because most of the time they're WRONG. Is this a Tiktok thing or something? People are adding AI-generated subtitles and not checking them? I can't imagine how annoying it is if you're someone who actually needs them for . Even content creators I actually like and who should know better are doing this. WHYYYYY.
