Apparently the " is a slur" discourse is back on social media and look, y'all, we settled this in the 1990s. Get with the century. We have a right to reclaim these words and we already have. Get the fuck over it, and accept my queer as fuck self or get into some therapy.

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@justafrog @kitoconnell That was my thought.
“We’re here! We’ve been cheerfully calling ourselves queer for thirty years! You ought to be used to it by now!”

*feeling insufficiently caffeinated. May rework for better scansion of all those fortuitous internal rhymes later.

Maybe, if you hadn’t refused to vote for the lesser of two evils in all those previous elections, we wouldn’t be seeing all this greater evil right now.

Why do you think so many people are obsessed with murder?

Gorfram, (edited )
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Are people actually obsessed with murder?
…Outside of its being a reliable plot device as old as Cain and Abel.
…And of war & genocide.
…& not including of the ongoing sacrifice of human lives to the voracious gods of capitalism.
…Also not including domestic violence and the other generally banal scenarios in which most instances of actual people actually killing each other take place.

Okay, maybe people are obsessed with murder.

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr @Jennifer @notroot I like true crime, although I have to take it in small doses. It makes me feel like I know what to watch out for; and like whatever sh*t is going on my life isn’t so bad by comparison.

This is for me to gauge how others think about a sensitive social issue.

I have taken a strong personal stance on it myself & suffered some backlash from a small number of people who believe blood is more important than anything else.

Would you keep on defending close family members who have raped & abused multiple women? When there's no question they're serial abusers/rapists of women? (And you're a woman, yourself)

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@CassandraZeroCovid @msquebanh Sometimes it comes down to two choices:

  1. You believe that Male Family Member could not ever commit rape. Therefore, no rape occurred, and all evidence of said rape must be refuted, rejected, &/or buried.
  2. You accept the evidence, & believe that Male Family Member can & did commit rape. You must now act accordingly; and those actions may result in you getting divorced, losing your home, getting written out of wills, and/or being rejected by your friends, your church, & other social groups.

It is a very rare & brave person who takes option #2. So rare that I’ve never actually met one myself.

My 94-yo mom has been in the hospital for the last 4 days, after a fall that hairline cracked a couple of ribs.

She lives 200 miles away; but usually we text each other every day. I’d been feeling that the content of our texts was kind of dumb; mostly about health stuff & weather & what we’d had for lunch & the antics of whatever flora & fauna was outside our windows.

But right now I’m really missing those texts.

Since I've talked a lot about change today, I'll ask a question about it:

If you've changed something in your life or about yourself, how did you do it, and why?

Gorfram, (edited )
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Easy(-ish): Changed my printing/handwriting/writing-by-hand from "should have been a doctor" to "frequently legible;" by spending about a year making my way through a workbook full of exercises for the purpose.

Hard As Hell, but not strictly voluntary: Stopped giving AF whether other people thought I was adequately/appropriate feminine; partly though maturity & growing self-confidence but most through a series of very painful hormone treatments for extraordinarily painful endometriosis.

Harder Than The Jaggedly Adamantine Rocks Of Darkest Hades: Learning how to let go of the intense self-hatred I'd developed through childhood trauma; through 40-ish years of various types & intensities of therapy (*this work remains in progress).

It has also left us comfortable with saying “Go fuck yourself.”

Without looking it up, tell me anything you know about Lithuania or Lithuanians.

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to the USSR. A dear friend of mine was staunchly opposed to the idea, because his parents had originally come to the US as Jews fleeting the Soviet regime in Lithuania.

I went anyway, and was not in fact kidnapped & sent to a Siberian prison camp; but returned home exhausted, edified, & bearing many gifts & souvenirs.
I’d happened on a rather nice book of Lithuanian fairy tales in English; & bought it for my friend as a peace offering…

How do you balance the needs of the person you are with, with your own needs?

Where do you set hard boundaries and why?

This can be in any relationship romantic, family, friends.

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr @TeflonTrout @Grizzlysgrowls The amazing thing is that while the direct:
“I am feeling tired & irritable & need to take a break,”
Is easy for others to ignore &/or walk over; that has yet to happen with the wildly polite:
“I would like to politely suggest that we should take a break, as I am feeling tired and may soon find myself struggling not to become irritable.”

Left ankle: hugely swollen, yet only somwhat painful.
Right knee: slightly swollen and puffy, yet incredibly tender, unstable, and difficult to use.

Is the difference due to the AGE of the injury? The left ankle was horribly twisted 50 years ago and has continued to hurt periodically over the past 5 decades.

Right knee eroded due to arthritis, only painful for the past decade, tho increasingly.

FWIW, I get the usual advice from every MD: RICE. Take painkillers.

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@thepoliticalcat @WhiteCatTamer *assuming it’s osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is beyond my sphere of comprehension.

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@thepoliticalcat @WhiteCatTamer I’ve had good luck with heat/ice rotation for plantar fasciitis. The idea was that repeated dilation & constriction of the blood vessels would sort of “pump” circulation into ligaments & tendons that otherwise don’t get much.
In my wildly inexpert medical understanding, the heat/ice might work well for the poor old tendons & ligaments in your ankle, but not so much for the lost bone & cartilage* in your knee.
