Have you ever stopped to think what Isaac must've felt after his father tried to kill him in the name of God? How he must've always wondered if his father loved him, and if he did, how could he have sacrificed him so easily just because God promised a land and another son, so replaceable, so disposable? Did he think that he was just like his father's sheep, another one of his properties he's willing to sell off?

Now, think about how your practice of religion affects your children.

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@teacherbuknoy That was my first thought when I first heard the story. I’ve always assumed that Isaac grew up to leave home at the first opportunity, and to avoid religious practice whenever possible.

*IDK if there’s info in the Bible about Isaac’s later life that contradicts this. My religious education was kind of wildly sporadic.

It has also left us comfortable with saying “Go fuck yourself.”

Yes, that is wonderful. I said it out loud immediately (indeed trilling the ‘r’); and am now waiting wishing hoping for the artist in question it is to play ones of those towns called Torremolinos.

The idea of human beings as rational utility-maximizing particles with insatiable hedonic desires is very much the product of an ideological project to justify capitalism as “natural” and has virtually no relationship to how actual human beings live but a lot of people have genuinely internalized it.

Trying to derive “human nature” by observing people under capitalist modernity is like looking at a bored, depressed wolf obsessively pacing a circle in a tiny zoo enclosure and concluding that this is “wolf nature.”

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@HeavenlyPossum @Oggie. It’s interesting that in this example & at least 3 of the 4* in the post above it, the people involved were non-White.

Gorfram,

@HeavenlyPossum Yikes! I didn’t mean to open (or even to bthreaten) a discussion anywhere near that large.

The only real idea behind my post was that there often seems to be a strong correlation between capitalism & European culture/whiteness.

Speaking of how the food cultures you grew up with impacts you:

When I left Southeast Asia, I only knew how to cook mostly French and Italian foods. It didn't make sense to cook Malay or Indonesian or Chinese foods because, well I could buy it cheaply any time I wanted. In that region.

I learned quickly that because I had never eaten a simple meal my entire life, eating food that was prepared simply made me extremely sad. Like, mental health bad / my life is bad / why did I leave, bad

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@skinnylatte @pmonks …they hand-delivered to me without charge & outside their delivery area. The chef’s mother was often the one to hand me my pickup food; &, despite a big language barrier, communicated such love to me that it helped fill the the gap left by not being able to see my own mother during lockdown.
I’d still be going there if they hadn’t had to go back to an all events-catering model after lockdown ended. If I ever throw a big party, they will cater it.

@skinnylatte @pmonks [Western white person barges into thread]
During covid lockdown, I wound up picking up a week’s worth of Indian takeout every Sunday. The food was good, as the online reviews had led me to expect; but I was surprised & nearly bowled over by the love that accompanied the food. Everyone there knew my car, the chef remembered what I liked & what I didn’t order again. A few times a miscommunication led to problems with my order, and…

Why do you think so many people are obsessed with murder?

Gorfram, (edited )
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Are people actually obsessed with murder?
…Outside of its being a reliable plot device as old as Cain and Abel.
…And of war & genocide.
…& not including of the ongoing sacrifice of human lives to the voracious gods of capitalism.
…Also not including domestic violence and the other generally banal scenarios in which most instances of actual people actually killing each other take place.

Okay, maybe people are obsessed with murder.

I saw a clip about kids from a Black HS having breakfast with kids from a White HS. A white girl said it would be uncomfortable if she invited a Black friend to her house because her parents “are older.” That's absurd, her parents have to be Gen X’ish, that's what Gen Xers said about their parents.

This is for me to gauge how others think about a sensitive social issue.

I have taken a strong personal stance on it myself & suffered some backlash from a small number of people who believe blood is more important than anything else.

Would you keep on defending close family members who have raped & abused multiple women? When there's no question they're serial abusers/rapists of women? (And you're a woman, yourself)

Gorfram,
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@CassandraZeroCovid @msquebanh Sometimes it comes down to two choices:

  1. You believe that Male Family Member could not ever commit rape. Therefore, no rape occurred, and all evidence of said rape must be refuted, rejected, &/or buried.
  2. You accept the evidence, & believe that Male Family Member can & did commit rape. You must now act accordingly; and those actions may result in you getting divorced, losing your home, getting written out of wills, and/or being rejected by your friends, your church, & other social groups.

It is a very rare & brave person who takes option #2. So rare that I’ve never actually met one myself.

Since I've talked a lot about change today, I'll ask a question about it:

If you've changed something in your life or about yourself, how did you do it, and why?

Gorfram, (edited )
@Gorfram@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Easy(-ish): Changed my printing/handwriting/writing-by-hand from "should have been a doctor" to "frequently legible;" by spending about a year making my way through a workbook full of exercises for the purpose.

Hard As Hell, but not strictly voluntary: Stopped giving AF whether other people thought I was adequately/appropriate feminine; partly though maturity & growing self-confidence but most through a series of very painful hormone treatments for extraordinarily painful endometriosis.

Harder Than The Jaggedly Adamantine Rocks Of Darkest Hades: Learning how to let go of the intense self-hatred I'd developed through childhood trauma; through 40-ish years of various types & intensities of therapy (*this work remains in progress).

I'm an infertile atheist. In a fit of desperation while doing IVF, I went into a church and promised that if I could have children, I'd have them baptized. I had twins and returned to fulfill my promise because of superstition. I was then told that because they were IVF babies, they had no souls and couldn't be baptized. So, I went back to my original FUCK RELIGION stance. 🙄

@GrimmReality I think “making love”, as in sex, got its start as a euphemism for “making whoopie,” not as in “making Whoopie pies.”
