Retired from IT, thank God! Into photography, writing, fountain pens and choral singing. Fighting and losing the eternal battle against typos. Ugly old married dude who is not looking to get laid. At the age where I get all the aches and pains, but none of the senior's discounts. I boost a lot. Avatar is a black and white photograph of an at best nondescript older guy. #Photography #Writing #BlackAndWhite #Toronto

The federal government has a new online "calculation sheet" to figure out your carbon-tax rebate:

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/child-family-benefits/cai-payment/canada-carbon-rebate-calculation-sheet-2023-alberta.html

It's quite literally a sheet, though.

Like, you can't type in it. It does no calculations.

I guess you're expected to print it out and pencil in all the values and use a calculator?

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@robsonfletcher OMG, do they not realize what year this? Look up trivial ocding exercise and you will see this form. No excuse for this kind of laziness.

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@BarryCooke @robsonfletcher Forms can be created that follow web accessibility guidelines (WCAG) if that is what you are referring to.

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@BarryCooke @robsonfletcher if someone is in a position of technical responsibility for that website and doesn’t what is possible in terms of both forms and accessibility then they are in the wrong line of work. This is basic stuff.

@BarryCooke @robsonfletcher I am clearly not as forgiving as you are when it comes this kind of poor performance.

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@BarryCooke @robsonfletcher I would add that competent organizations usually have a multi-stage content planning, review and content publishing approval workflow. Now if it’s two teenagers in a basement ….

@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@BarryCooke @robsonfletcher to not perform your core functions? Hmmm…

@BarryCooke @robsonfletcher forgiving and forgetting are two different things.

The truth is, Conservatives hate the carbon tax because it is progressive and returns the revenue back to Canadians directly, not corporations. They dislike the fact that carbon taxes are not an upward wealth redistribution scheme, or a form of trickle down.

Perhaps an unpopular statement, but not everyone who owns a house in is rich. There are a good number of “house poor” people who while they may own a house, are living on a fixed income, are an elderly senior etc. and can’t maintain the property. I’ll bet there are ways to integrate the house poor into housing solutions (more multi-generational housing, downsizing on place, allowing city-subsidized micro-housing units in back yards etc.). 1/2

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@CAWguy Agree 100%! What scares me is when I see people demanding "wealth" taxes on primary residences (regardless of how rich the individual is or despite the fact they own no other property); essentially a tax on an unrealized capital gain on someone's most illiquid asset.

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@jpaskaruk Perhaps another unpopular opinion. If the goal is to destroy the private rental market by punitive taxation, we need to be ready todeal with consequences (both intended and unintended). Landlords will do their best to pass along the costs to their tenants. If we simply put a cap on rents will companies simply get out of the rental business, try to convert rental into condos or just let the housng stock decay in place? 1/2

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@jpaskaruk We need to be ready to deal the cost of an expanded public housing model (which we definitely need!).

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@Rickd6 Agree 100%! Especially if the city can help with administrative tasks, protection against tenant problems etc.

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@jpaskaruk I fear that violence begets violence. And the 1% are good at getting the working class to resent the middle class (what’s left of it) while they laugh from the sidelines.

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@jpaskaruk I am not implying for a second that violence has not been done; let's get that straight, please.

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@jpaskaruk Just to confirm I am a late cycle Boomer myself.

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@jpaskaruk As far as housing is concerned, any real solutions will require fundamental changes to how our society views it. And one of those involves primary residences not being seen as a piggy bank. It will take courage on the part of politicians, and the understanding that there is a difference between villains and scapegoats. It is politically hard to fight back against the 1%, and I fear they will take action that harms the middle class (conveniently defined as upper class).

Ottawa public school board, 3 Toronto-area school boards launch lawsuit against social media giants

"The lawsuit claims that social media products, negligently designed for compulsive use, have rewired the way children think, behave, and learn, leaving educators and schools to manage the fallout," the boards said in a statement.

How about we boycott oil and gas to show Trudeau and the Libs how much we hate the carbon tax.

@GarlicBreath I feel a majority Canadians will only learn the truth about the carbon “tax” the hard way: Poilievre gets into power, kills the tax, and Canadians find out that they aren’t magically saving money; in fact it will cost most of them more. But I’m sure the CPC already has spin ready for this scenario, to keep voter ignorance firmly entrenched. No shortage of entitled idiots in Canada.
