In case you haven't gotten sick of hearing me talk about this issue, I was on CBC-Yukon this morning talking about satellite pollution: https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-393-yukon-morning/clip/16034585-the-story-one-astronomers-battle-satellites

The short version: satellites are super annoying for astronomy, but are completely terrifying for what they might do to the atmosphere as they deorbit in large numbers (and we don't actually know what they'll do - that's the scary part.)

Lats,
@Lats@aus.social avatar

@sundogplanets I am amazed that the economics stack up. The satellites deorbit in a few years and must be replaced. The sheer cost of doing that must make it the highest maintenance cost communications system existing. Totally ignoring the rabid climate change accelerant caused by these incessant launches the whole concept seems unsustainable.

For governments, the message is don’t let your terrestrial network decay as the tech bros could pull the pin at any time.

Higher density housing along the Parramatta transport corridor is probably a good idea however if all those dwellings have 2 cars and people drive to work it will be a disaster. What are the co-requisite policies on parking, size of vehicle, power for charging vehicles, for walking and bike paths, working from home to ensure chaos doesn’t result?

ends when carbon pollution stops (Mann, M. E. (2023) Frontiers in https://doi.org/10.3389/fsci.2023.1256273

*Long-term warming will largely be determined by CO2 emissions but aerosols & short-lived, human-generated greenhouse gases such as methane must also be considered

*At this point, the obstacles to are neither physical nor technological but political, which means they can be overcome with the right sense of urgency.

Lats,
@Lats@aus.social avatar

@scientist I love the idea that if we stop pumping CO2 into the atmosphere then heating will stop as the oceans reestablish balance. It’s a hope. The downside of the message is that the fossil industry and their enablers will see it as they can continue to pollute and all will be well in the end. Good news can be used for nasty outcomes.

On the other hand we have all these tipping points that drive positive feedback to consider and the good news may actually be a rosy picture while the reality is a much longer time before the system stabilises.

Lats,
@Lats@aus.social avatar

@scientist @silence7 it is certainly a lot easier to keep it in the ground than put it back in the ground. I imagine that the extractors are making sure that they won’t paying for the sequestering.

Lats,
@Lats@aus.social avatar

@scientist @silence7 I think we got better out of then I expected.

When talking about politicians, we seem to have a few views: worried about jobs, worried about donors ( companies) and ideological convictions. We have had the absurd situation of a methane gas extraction company threatening the Australian Government with cancellation of $6b of projects unless they got appropriate legislation. The government caved as was worried about jobs, the opposition and a voter backlash. They kept it secret until the legislation passed.

Our previous PM was widely thought to be a sociopath, it’s the sort of job that attracts them.

Humanity isn’t going to change trajectory on destroying the environment.

“At least a quarter of the billionaires registered as delegates at Cop28 made their fortunes from highly polluting industries such as petrochemicals, mining and beef production, a new analysis has shown.
The findings, revealed to the Guardian in an exclusive analysis of the 34 billionaires who are signed up to the UN summit, raise concerns about the influence wielded by ultra-rich, mega-emitters on the world’s efforts to tackle the climate crisis. Together the 34 are worth about $495.5bn.
The high number of billionaires at the conference, along with the many private jets they flew in on, suggests Cop may now be second only to Davos as a gathering point for the world’s ultra-rich, who can meet and potentially influence government leaders and senior politicians and bureaucrats, while making deals with other business owners.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/dec/12/one-in-four-billionaire-cop28-delegates-made-fortunes-from-polluting-industries

@GottaLaff it is really a case in point here. Liberals across the world engage in ideas whereas conservatives harness emotions and emotive slogans. Your PM friend is being true to type and as such will never win an election or sway the masses as good argument really must engage people too.
