Dear @firefox : Please stop saving images as webp when I drag them out of the browser. Forever stop that. Even if they are webp originally, just give me a setting to auto-convert them to JPEG. When I get a webp file the first thing I have to do is convert it manually if I'm going to do anything with it.

MisterMoo,
@MisterMoo@mastodon.online avatar

@kuneho I love Firefox and dragging images out of the window is a great thing to be able to do, but not when they're webp.

@grue You don't need to identify yourself as a Linux user. The insulting remark at the top of your post and the tone of the rest of it makes it clear.

Ever been forced by your workplace to use a piece of software you'd prefer not to? For example, ever tried to share a webp image on MS Teams? You can't; you have to convert it first. Lots of household-name software rejects the format.

Hopefully the Firefox team needs to care about more than the needs of condescending Linux users.

@grue Another very productive reply. Great. Enjoy your perfectly cross-compatible software environment that somehow exists despite a lack of compatibility not being a "problem" for any software maker to care about.

Tesla stock rocketing after hours simply on the mention of an affordable Tesla in 2025, backed up by absolutely nothing, after nothing but bad news on the financial call.

PT Barnum would be so proud.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell I'm with @textualdeviance - cars aren't going anywhere and if this is where you want to steer every argument, you'll spend the next 70 years railing against cars while they remain central to the city experience all the while. The solution to increasing teacher pay isn't to stop paving roads, it's to start paying teachers more.

Why does the U.S.S. Enterprise in the first Trek film "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (1979) - ST:TMP - have silly ROUND screens on the consoles?

In a way, you can sort of blame me. Or at least, blame bad timing on my part.

When I was working on this film I saw production drawings showing the round screens, which I found ludicrous. I brought this up with the powers-that-be. I pointed out that the Enterprise displays should not emulate 1950s TV sets, and that round screens wasted display space unnecessarily. I also suggested that by the time of the film, displays would probably be holographic (the franchise eventually caught up to this idea in the more recent productions).

My criticism was taken seriously. It was agreed that the round screens would go and that rectangular screens would replace them. Mission accomplished!

Except ... a few days later, I was pulled aside and told that, unfortunately, the round screens would stay. Why? It turned out that they had already been cast in fiberglass by the Paramount set crews, and there wasn't sufficient budget to redo them. So the silly round screens are what you see in the film today.

If I had been able to move on this a bit earlier, this probably would have turned out differently. But I did try.

MisterMoo,
@MisterMoo@mastodon.online avatar

@lauren We were this close to having all the problems with this film resolved before it even came out. Mind blown.

I thought I’d be irritated having to pay 1~2 euros for the public toilets in Paris. But the fact you can tap your card (no change needed) and the bathrooms are clean, with toilet paper, soap, hand towels & attendants actually makes it pretty great. As someone who periodically has stomach issues, it’s also anxiety reducing (there are places you would not want to be stuck for a prolonged period…!).

Although I say this from the privilege of not having to worry about spending several euros.

MisterMoo,
@MisterMoo@mastodon.online avatar

@elizabethtasker Right? I, too, found this a moment of culture shock when I visited Europe for the first time, but it's so clean and well-attended. A model for the world.

Dear @Gargron,

A fediverse server called Threads is violating mastodon.social’s second server rule:

“2. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia…
Transphobic behavior such as intentional misgendering and deadnaming is strictly prohibited.”

https://glaad.org/smsi/report-meta-fails-to-moderate-extreme-anti-trans-hate-across-facebook-instagram-and-threads/

Can you please defederate from this server to protect the trans people on mastodon.social?

Thank you.

PS. It’s run by these guys: https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/26/facebook-secret-project-snooped-snapchat-user-traffic/

MisterMoo,
@MisterMoo@mastodon.online avatar

@aral @Gargron Just to give the other side of this: there are probably a lot of pro-trans people who see server-level defederation of an instance as big as Threads as a draconian over-reaction in light of available user-level blocking tools. I just don't see any room in this thread for reasonable disagreement. It doesn't help that the few people I am seeing disagree are wearing their awfulness on their sleeves. Social media incentivizes a black-or-white viewpoint and I see tons of that here.

@cferdinandi @flexghost 1/20/21, polarization causes Republicans to pivot from "Operation Warp Speed is a miracle" to "Operation Kill More People Through Vaccine Denialism will make Biden look bad." The point of the ad isn't the number of deaths, it's the horrific circumstances, the vast incompetence, open-air stupidity, shirking of responsibility and lack of empathy on daily display during the former administration, which is all useful given our short memories.
