Viral out of Ethiopia!
Ethiopian Foreign Ministry official, Ambassador Suleiman Dedefo has secured a deal to import electric vehicles into the country.

But it's not the news that is going viral, it's the announcement of it.

9 hours after he broke the news, he is yet to delete his tweet which includes poorly cropped screenshots from his computer's browser and a tab that reveals His Excellency's adult content preferences.

They are hooting and hollering all over Ethiopian social media.

"Naughty Black Housewife" encircled by Ethiopian Twitter users who were quick to pounce on the tweet of Ethiopian government official Suleiman Dedefo Abba Tateq @Abbatateq · 1h 😂😂😂😂😂😂 ሚኪያስ @mike18784760 · 37m Caught in 4K 😂😂😂 Andu @Shifta251 · 2h lmfaoooooooo!!!!!!

In an age of LLMs, is it time to reconsider human-edited web directories?

Back in the early-to-mid '90s, one of the main ways of finding anything on the web was to browse through a web directory.

These directories generally had a list of categories on their front page. News/Sport/Entertainment/Arts/Technology/Fashion/etc.

Each of those categories had subcategories, and sub-subcategories that you clicked through until you got to a list of websites. These lists were maintained by actual humans.

Typically, these directories also had a limited web search that would crawl through the pages of websites listed in the directory.

Lycos, Excite, and of course Yahoo all offered web directories of this sort.

(EDIT: I initially also mentioned AltaVista. It did offer a web directory by the late '90s, but this was something it tacked on much later.)

By the late '90s, the standard narrative goes, the web got too big to index websites manually.

Google promised the world its algorithms would weed out the spam automatically.

And for a time, it worked.

But then SEO and SEM became a multi-billion-dollar industry. The spambots proliferated. Google itself began promoting its own content and advertisers above search results.

And now with LLMs, the industrial-scale spamming of the web is likely to grow exponentially.

My question is, if a lot of the web is turning to crap, do we even want to search the entire web anymore?

Do we really want to search every single website on the web?

Or just those that aren't filled with LLM-generated SEO spam?

Or just those that don't feature 200 tracking scripts, and passive-aggressive privacy warnings, and paywalls, and popovers, and newsletters, and increasingly obnoxious banner ads, and dark patterns to prevent you cancelling your "free trial" subscription?

At some point, does it become more desirable to go back to search engines that only crawl pages on human-curated lists of trustworthy, quality websites?

And is it time to begin considering what a modern version of those early web directories might look like?

@degoogle

Sythelux,
@Sythelux@social.tchncs.de avatar

@ajsadauskas @degoogle I mean we could still use all modern tools. I'm hosting a searxng manually and there is currently an ever growing block list for AI generated websites that I regularly import to keep up to date. You could also make it as allow list thing to have all websites blocked and allow websites gradually.

Sythelux,
@Sythelux@social.tchncs.de avatar

@ajsadauskas @degoogle I started that because it bothered me that you couldn't just report a website to duckduckgo that obviously was a stackoverflow crawler. This problem persists since reddit and stackoverflow are a thing themselves. why are there no measurements from search engine to get a hold of it.

I never understood that.

At the end of February, we were covering our daily energy needs (including heating and domestic hot water via our heat pump) from solar power.

Our battery charge doesn't yet last through the night at this time of year, so we draw from the grid in the early morning. But we export the same amount right back in the afternoon.

@xahteiwi very nice and using the grid as basically a huge battery is a good Solution for the time being

@aras hey aras. I found your unity 3D gaussian splatting for unity repo and am currently trying to get it to work with the magic leap 2 and I actually got so far as that it is loading at least the debug points in space as you can see in the video attached, but they don't have any color well and the splats aren't working either of course.

Thank you for the whole repo btw this helped me a lot with what I want to achieve.

Do you have an idea how I could troubleshoot it or possible solutions?

Magiv leap 2 screencap you can see the laser pointer going through space and revealing negative space points in the world.

Sythelux,
@Sythelux@social.tchncs.de avatar

@aras it is Vulkan API and Android based but with x64 CPU

Edit: I'm reading through the issue atm, but it is probably something different.

Sythelux,
@Sythelux@social.tchncs.de avatar

@aras ohhhhhh it seemingly works. It was only the force multipass!

Sythelux,
@Sythelux@social.tchncs.de avatar

@aras the issue with the magic leap 2 is now the gaussians are always at the same Position in screen space, so the camera doesn't actually move, but the world around the camera so the splats stay at the same position in screenspace?

I'll investigate further.

I’ve been experimenting with Shelly smart home products for the first time and am kind of blown away with the versatility. I wired up one of their relays to my ERV and now I can automate ramping up my system if humidity or CO2 levels are too high. It’s a bit on the geeky/DIY side of smart home tech setup, but damn … it’s pretty fun making a dumb ERV smart.

Sythelux,
@Sythelux@social.tchncs.de avatar

@mattferrell I'm happy you found shelly. I would've thought they are very small and unknown. I like their tech, too. It gives me alle the freedom I need for a DIY Smarthome.
