🧵Signs of the 17-year are already showing up in . The city is a 25-min drive west of and had overwhelming numbers of these cicadas in 2006 and 1989. This year, sections of the state will also be hit with a 13-year brood, an event that hasn't happened since 1803.

If you're wondering if you might be seeing them near you, this is what to look for in the soil.

Zooming in on a small immature cicada (hard to see). Around the insect, there are holes in the ground. Each hole has a top that juts out of the ground, shaped like a topless muddy hut. (Photo credit Haley Hogan, Elmhurst, Illinois.) Note that I did not believe a content warning was warranted when posting these images, because the insects in these images are so incredibly difficult to discern.

🧵 / According to famous #ComicBook industry icon #JuliusSchwartz , #Superman creator #JerrySiegel used to correspond in 1930 with Walter Dennis, a Chicago newspaper #reporter and #scifi fan. Siegel had co-creator #JoeShuster use Dennis' likeness to create Superman'a alter ego #ClarkKent in #ActionComics.

The name Clark came from actor #ClarkGable and Kent came from actor #KentTaylor.

🧵 It's #SupermanDay!

The #Superman #RadioShow aired from 1940 to 1951. #BudColyer voiced the #ManOfSteel, which was sponsored by “Kellogg's Pep Cereal.”

The show established many iconic phrases we now associate with the character, including “Up... up... and AWAAY!” (used to give action to flight scenes).

#Kryptonite and #PerryWhite were also first created for the #OTR series.

🧵 / It's #SupermanDay!

In 1946, #Superman took on the real-world #KKK. Writer #StetsonKennedy used the #Superman #OTRshows to expose the nasty secrets of the real-world #Klan. In the “Clan of the Fiery Cross” storyline, Kennedy exposed their corruption & #bigotry, which led to a huge decrease in membership.

The Klan knew they had a spy in their midst, but didn't know it was him. After he was identified, he received death threats for the rest of his life.

February 29th, , is the official birthday of Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent.

It was first designated as his birthday in issue 164 of World's Finest Comics in 1966. (The linked article does not include this fact, for some reason.)

It is also the birthday of , the secret identity of his fellow superhero, (aka in the ).

LOL! Exactly. I always find it funny when the comic book writers create any scene where Superman is supposedly surprised. Surely he must merely be playing along...

But in this one, I also wonder how no one was hit by flying bricks. 😄

You might enjoy a (somewhat-recent) comic book series called "Superman '78." They take the characters from the Superman II movie and follow up with a Brainiac story. The characters are all drawn to resemble the films.

More than 50 years ago, #PaulMcCartney's #HofnerBass guitar was stolen from the back of a truck. It was originally sold by the thief to an unsuspecting musician for a few British pounds and a drink at a pub.

Now, decades later and after recent detective work by avid fans, it has finally been returned to an overjoyed Sir Paul.

I'm so sorry. I did that EXACT SAME THING when I first used a dishwasher! And it made the same level of mess. I had to mop it several times to get all the sticky soap off the floor.

Dawn liquid dish soap sure makes a helluva lotta bubbles in a dishwasher.

In honor of today's #streaming release of #MrMonksLastCase on #PeacockTV , here's the delightful #PSA that #TonyShalhoub and cast did during the #pandemic lockdown. For me, seeing it while being so isolated was as comforting as a visit from an old and dear friend.

In a recent interview with #SethMeyer, Tony Shalhoub said that the ratings response to this video at the time, was the reason that #NBC decided to bring #MrMonk back for his own movie.

They've been on Mastodon since June, have only ONE follower, and follow no one. That tells you all you need to know-- that some of the trolls from Xitter must have found their way here.

Don't worry. Just remind yourself how Mastodon works:
Ignore the trolls & they go away. Feed them and they flourish.

Don't feed the trolls-- espec one who claims to know the true meaning of "art," but whose profile pic is from a prepubescent TV cartoon.

You're obviously not willing to check facts, or you would have seen that I am not a "sir," merely by checking my profile. So forgive me for not believing someone's "promise" that they have Nazi propaganda (of all things) to back up their claims.

(Psst... Nazi experiments were never legit and never used actual Scientific Method. So quoting them doesn't do any good, anyway.)

A silly safeguard, indeed. But she will have to learn in life to get around lots of various weird programming-based user issues. Teach her to try to think of alternatives whenever the computer glitches or says no to something. In this case, maybe she can use alternatives like "flowerpot" (as one word), "box," etc.
