At what point do ordinary people start being charged higher electricity bills because of AI?

At what point will we get electricity outages because of AI and data centers?

Somebody is going to have to pay for the massive upgrade of public electrical infrastructure because of the demands of AI. Guess who's going to pay for that. The public.

AI is the latest scam by Big Tech to siphon off wealth. All those lazy folk using AI think they're onto a good thing, think they're getting it for free.

andemann,

@gerrymcgovern Google is opening a data center outside og Skien, Norway in 2026. It is estimated that the average household in energy region NO2 (southern Coast of norway) will get an increased yearlt electricity bill of NOK 440.~40USD Norwegian news story. https://e24.no/energi-og-klima/i/KnOwKy/analytiker-google-datasenter-kan-oeke-stroemregningen-med-440-kroner

I really need the ability to say "content warning, no actually I mean it."

Parts of this site are essentially unusable if you don't open up all content warnings because people use them like spoiler tags or a way to tag things that make others vaguely uncomfortable.

But sometimes it really is "I want to share something w/ a real content warning." Like I want to talk about the ACEs study, it's great, but also it's heavy content.

The culture around these things is just so broken -.-

andemann, (edited )

@hrefna finally a good use of AI/LLMs: a browser plugin that analyzes the content ahead of display it and adds trigger warnings based on the notes from your latest therapy sessions. Available for a modest subscription fee from selected therapists. standard Terms and conditions applies

@anderseknert isn't there a risk og getting bombe by PRs that generate huge costs for the projects if they don't limit it?

terrible idea: GPS-based mouse.
It has no optical sensor, just a GPS locator.
You move the mouse around, and it transmits that movement back to the PC, over a built in 5G modem.
You may have to move it a lot to click on anything

@foone sounds like a great device for activating our Border Collie and getting work done at the same time

Okay, not to pick on the admins, but to call out this really quickly…

This would not have been a "small mistake."

Do.
Not.
Do.
This.

It is not a "small mistake" it is "irresponsible to an extreme" to have other's data on your local systems, especially in an unencrypted state.

Also I don't care for the delaying informing people, but I especially don't care for delaying informing people to change their passwords even if you can't/won't reveal the breach for whatever reason.

@hrefna if any of the users are EU based it is probably a GDPR violation as well. Requires all data used for testing and development to be anonymized if possible

Ad blockers are also cybersecurity. Say it with me.

They reduce malvertising, watering hole attacks, and general malicious script execution. It’s not all about you, ad firms.

andemann,

@hacks4pancakes we need adblocker subscription service that pays the sites to not show ads to subscribers.

@GossiTheDog Two plausable spins on the story
1: Apollo 13 style scenario where the imagine how they can build an oxygen generator from spare parts in the sub.
2: How long their oxygen would last if one of the persons on board killed all the others

Regular reminder to web devs that emails from a web app or service MUST tell users how they can opt out of emails, not just on bulk emails, but also transactional emails! 🚨

Failure to do so is actually against the law in the United States.

So if, for instance, somebody signs up for something with your email address and the email doesn't give you a way to nope out, you can report that to the FTC!

Reference: https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business

Reports can be filed here: https://ReportFraud.ftc.gov

andemann,

@josh Any idea how this applies to European companies using US email providers (Postmark) to send messages to european recipients?

@hrefna the "their own domain" policy is not viable until we can add something like the MX record for mastodon instances and one server can handle multiple domains

    andemann,

@JessTheUnstill @hrefna that can work if the overhead for each new container in is small enough letting each server handle anywhere from 100- 1000+ instances. For many orgs their activity might be limited to a single account with infrequent use. Are there solutions for multidomain hosting within a single instance like web and mail servers handle it?

To be fair, I feel like Reddit should pay @christianselig $20 million to help them improve their shitty app.

Apps like Apollo have made Reddit usable for millions of people. This is an idiotic move.

Lots of consternation today about newsmax joining newsie.social, with calls for news orgs to create their own fedi-instance rather that joining one like newsie (or journa). That might make sense for some news organizations, but I can imagine it would be challenging for some. The main issue I see is that journalists likely want to maintain a social media presence that doesn’t go away if they move to a new org, so I have to imagine instances like journa and newsie are attractive to individuals.
Not defending newsie having newsmax, but I think it’s unreasonable to say that sites like newsie that cater to journalists shouldn’t exist.

    andemann,

@jerry whether a journalist gets to maintain their presence or not should be part of their employment contracts. If the individuals should build their personal or their employers brand

    Good observation by Yann LeCunn:

To those who think AGI is upon us:

    1. why don't we have level-5 autonomous driving?
Any 17 year old can learn to drive in 20 hours of training.

    2. Why don't we have domestic robots that can clear the dinner table and fill the dishwasher?
Any 10 year old can learn to do that in minutes.

Obviously, we are still missing something big for machines to reach human-level intelligence.

How do we get machines to learn how the world works?

    andemann,

@Migueldeicaza because we forget to train the AI on the previous 17 years of general world handling skills

Now working on a 'Pokemon'-ish clone game in Unreal Engine 5

Gonna mix 2D and 3D assets in a cool way and it will have most things found also in the classic Pokemon games like:

    • Team (party)
    • Backpack and items
    • Catching Pokemon
    • Leveling, evolution and moves
    • Index (Pokedex)

And much more :blobcatgiggle: I'll call it Cybermon for now with 'Monsters' so I can at least piss off Monster Engery a bit :catblush:
