I have a soft spot for Libertarians even though I shouldn't and they don't deserve it. When I was a kid I had a weird neighbor who was always giving me Libertarian books... I wish I still had some of them they were WILD. He was a thorn in the side of the local, school board as well insisting that if they had an event at the school that involved politics Libertarians had to be included.

And in defense of the guy, he was about as likable and earnest as a Libertarian could be.

The point of solar panels is not to ensure "solar profitability," but to make for a greener, better world. Its profitability is only justified insofar as it moves us towards that goal. If we want to switch to renewables, then sometimes we're going to have surplus, because of how renewables work. This is well known and discussed ad nauseam. If that makes power markets unstable, then the problem is with markets, not with there being too many solar panels.

The problem is that baseload thinking doesn't work anymore.

What do you do during windy or sunny peaks, which get ever more common? Throttle the nuclear plant? Shut down the cheap renewables?

Nuclear is already damn expensive if it runs at 95% capacity. Running it as backup for renewables, with very limited output at most times, is a cost nightmare. And also not what the technology seems to be good at.

I think they do.

The financial feasability depends on how much energy it produces over a plants lifetime. The lifetime is limited.

Even running at high capacity, it's already more expensive than other plants. Reducing the output doesn't seem to prolong plant life that much, and the costs of running it stay the same anyways.

Wir berichten ja ziemlich oft über spannende medizinische Fortschritte, die immer mehr Krankheiten behandelbar machen.
Die Realität ist aber: der wissenschaftliche Fortschritt in der Medizin ist heutzutage nahezu irrelevant. Klingt nett, kann man aber knicken. Denn denn weltweit wird der Zugang zu selbst grundlegenden medizinischen Behandlungen immer eingeschränkter. Wir haben längst fast überall medizinischen Rückschritt, egal was im Labor passiert.

People are tweeting about LARPs in the context of the flop of a Star Wars immersive experience ($3,000 for meh?), and I'd like to point out the vast majority of both Nordic and American LARPs take place in original settings, not fanfic. The medium's strength is not rolling with a specific setting like Star Wars but combining different things, to the point that it became an Intercon trope by the 2010s that everything was a weird mashup (a LARP called Slash had PCs from like 12 different canons).

Personally, I prefer larps that have one setting. I find them more immersive.

But I totally get the logistical issues like costumes for single events, or getting enough players.

My personal compromise for fantasy is larps with thematic camps (Warhammer, Orcs, Elves, High Medieval, Vikings,...). Large consistent groups are impressive.

I so far have been really enjoying Helldivers 2 and definitely see myself continuing to play it for the foreseeable future. It also plays extremely well on Linux with no issues. Just install from steam and Play. I did use Proton-GE as I tend to have better performance with games using it but that was it.

I'm so glad Gaming on Linux has become so easy that now I can play games with most of my friends without issues.

Soweit ich das verstehe erkennt die Einstufung als internationaler Konflikt schlicht an, dass das Gebiet zweier Staaten betroffen ist. Israel wurde von Palästina aus angegriffen, und führt jetzt Krieg in Palästina. Betrifft vor allem den Schutz der Zivilisten.

Der nicht-internationale Konflikt bezieht sich auf die Hamas, die vom ICC nicht als legitime Regierung/Staat anerkannt wird. Damit geniesst sie viel weniger Schutz. Fast vogelfrei.

Interessant sind vielleicht die Haftbefehle.

Palästina hat das Rom-Statut ratifiziert, entsprechend müssten die Palästinenser Sinwar & Co. festnehmen und nach Den Haag überstellen. Das könnte bei Nachkriegsszenarien in Gaza ne Rolle spielen. Qatar und Türkei sind aber keine Unterzeichner, von daher ist der Druck auf die Hamas vermutlich begrenzt.

Netanyahu dürfte es innenpolitisch zusätzlich unter Druck setzen.

Interessant sind auch einige Formulierungen in der Begründung:

"My Office submits that the war crimes alleged in these applications were committed in the context of an international armed conflict between Israel and Palestine, and a non-international armed conflict between Israel and Hamas running in parallel."

Die Anerkennung als internationaler Konflikt dürfte einigen nicht gefallen.

Was auch auffällt ist, dass der Staatsanwalt sich gegen die Hamas auf das Oct.7-Massaker und die Geiselnahme beschränkt. Andere ziemlich offensichtliche Kriegsverbrechen wie der Beschuss israelischer Städte werden nicht angeklagt.

Da scheint man sich schon einige Punkte rausgegriffen zu haben bei denen man sich ziemlich sicher ist die vor Gericht durchzubekommen.

Das hat schon ne deutlich andere Qualität: Systematische Angriffe auf Zivilisten gemäss der Strategie der Organisation.

Ist die umgangssprachliche Übersetzung von "Extermination" nicht einfach Massenmord?

Das kann sich mit Völkermord überschneiden wenn die entsprechende Motivation gegeben ist - etwa Auslöschung einer ethnischen Gruppe. Gerade das findet sich nicht in der Anklage gegen Netanjahu und Gallant.

Da gehen unsere Einschätzungen dann auseinander.

  • Israel hat die Lieferung lebensnotwendiger Güter nach Gaza direkt nach Oct.7 komplett unterbunden, und auch danach willkürlich und unverhältnismässig beschränkt
  • Das Ziel war die Zivilbevölkerung zu strafen und Druck auf die Hamas auszuüben
  • Dies führte zum Tod von Zivilisten im grossen Stil, was für Netanjahu und Gallant abzusehen war.

Die Anklage ist da imho sehr treffend.

Nichts was die Hamas nach Oct.7 getan hat und noch tut ist Teil der Anklage, mit Ausnahme der israelischen Geiseln.

Die wohlwollende Annahme ist hier vielleicht, dass man das womöglich nicht direkt auf Sinwar & Co. zurückführen kann. Und dass man halt erstmal den Haftbefehl mit wasserfesten Punkten auf den Weg bringen wollte.

Meinem Verständnis nach ja. Wobei Menschenrechte und damit etwa ein Folterverbot auch hier gelten.

Aber es fällt schon auf, dass Handlungen gegen die Hamas nicht Teil der Anklage sind. Auch das recht komplexe Thema der Verhältnismässigkeit wird ausgeklammert.

Stattdessen geht es wohl vor allem um Handlungen die Zivilisten zum Ziel hatten.

mit dem angriff auf rafah wird nicht nur das verbrechen in gaza zuende geführt, egal, wie man es dereinst nennen wird, aber auch die verbleibenden 33 geiseln werden vermutlich sterben. die hamas hatte in letzter minute vor dem angriff im waffenstillstandsvorschlag angeboten, sie alle frei zu lassen. dann hoben die flieger mit den bomben ab.

ich hoffe, die israelverteidiger sind stolz auf sich.

Ich glaub unsere Ansichten liegen recht nah beieinander.

Dass das Entführen von Geiseln ein Kriegsverbrechen ist, das sofort beendet werden sollte, sollte eigentlich ein Allgemeinplatz sein.

Stattdessen weigern sich mittlerweile Typen im besten Neusprech überhaupt von "Geiseln" zu sprechen.

Mastodon feels strange right now.

A colleague is currently in , visiting family and taking care of the cancer treatment for a parent.

And despite 300+ drones and rockets being fired, what you don't see on Mastodon are: No discussion of the social cost of Iran's weapon programs. No concern how the military escalation by the Iranian government might endanger Iranians. Hardly any concern for the Israelis being targeted.

Only a lot of shitty "But the west" takes, most devoid of empathy.

Personally, I feel like the changes are already underway. Superblocks, car free city centers, switch from fossils to renewables, right to repair and so on.

But a lot of this pressure is piecemeal. Many folks seem to have a hard time imagining anything other than capitalism or autocracy.

And i feel like might fill this gap. A vision of a future that's positively worth living in. A narrative to challenge consumerism and nihilism.

There are no hazardous materials in crystaline modules. Well, there's tin from soldering, but that's it.

Your standard solar module consists of:

  • A glass panel and aluminium frame (80%-90% of weight)
  • A plastic sheet on the back, or another glass panel
  • Rows of solar cells glued onto the back panel, soldered together and connected to a junction box.
