The daily check of the seeds I'm trying to grow on my one sunny windowsill. It always seems so completely and utterly improbable that anything will grow at all from those tiny dried-up specks.

And then that first green nub appearing in dark soil. A tiny miracle.

From the start of the year at Housesteads Roman Fort, midway on Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland.

Built c. AD 124 & home to 800 infantrymen until the end of the C4th, when it apparently became 'a lair of rustlers and thieves'. Bleak and atmospheric on a cloudy day in January, the past still very much present.

A stretch of Hadrian's wall - mossy and spattered with lichen, running into the distance. There's a couple of small woods in the distance, of wintery trees. The fields are winter-greens, the sky cloudy with a low light.
The northern granary at Housesteads Roman fort. There's a series of regularly spaced stones largely covered with lichen that supported the raised floor to guard the grain against vermin. In the distance, there's a rather bleak landscape with low cloud and wintery trees.
The other side of the granary with a grid of licheny stones that used to support the floor. There's a larger wall on one side. The sky is clouded and the atmosphere is a little bleak.

Back at my desk today, tapping into yesterday's wild escape over to Littondale on the single-track road. Pen-y-ghent gill etching its way out of sight, limestone terraces catching the low winter sun.

A wild, wet and windy Christmas here, but on with the waterproofs and out with the dog, a big flask of apple, tomato and celery soup. Among all the greys, the moss on the stone walls a radiant green. This little one in particular - life flourishing in unlikely places. Happy Yule, folks - sharing some gratitude for stepping outside, where the perspective shifts and everything feels better. Feels like the massive spike in water consumption by data centres underpinning AI is a Bad Thing that needs to be talked about more, irrespective of whichever tech bro is the brand face.

Hard to jump on the hype train when it seems like yet more profit acceleration for the few while obscuring the underlying costs for the many.
