So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.

"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."

SSH backdoor has infected 400,000 Linux servers over 15 years and keeps on spreading

Ebury backdoors SSH servers in hosting providers, giving the malware extraordinary reach.

Every chance I've had to interact with satellite operators in conferences, I've asked them about their plans for dealing with solar storms (I'm particularly worried about Starlink, which requires dozens of maneuvers per day to avoid collisions. What if a large fraction shuts down for a few hours?!)

The universal response to my inquiries has been "Don't worry about that, it'll be fine!"

I guess we're going to find out very soon. https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/

Steel produced prior to World War II is highly sought after, and usually sells for a premium. The reason why may surprise you. It's not due to any perceived higher quality than steel produced later -- not in the ordinary sense, anyway.

The issue is that steel smelted after WWII pretty much all contains tiny amounts of radioactive contamination from above ground nuclear tests, which were common until the signing of the nuclear test ban treaty in 1963.

While the amount of radiation in that steel is extremely low, it's high enough to interfere with some very high precision instrumentation. So manufacturers of some affected equipment want that "old steel" to use instead.

Since the global atmospheric contamination levels associated with those tests has been dropping over the decades, it's a decreasing problem for newly produced steel.

Still, a large find of old steel, like a sunken pre-WWII battleship for example, is still much valued due to these issues.

So now you know.

com,
@com@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren For similar reasons, the Bomb Pulse helps spot fake art and artifacts claimed to be from before the mid-20th century, since they'd have this nuclear mark if made after.

It’s quite useful for other things too: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomb_pulse

You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

@Edent If you call Bank of America, they will verify you using a code sent by SMS that contains, “DO NOT share this Sign In code.”

I’ll confirm with the agent that they’re asking for the one that says under no circumstances am I to share with anyone, and they reply cheerfully, “yeah that’s the one.” 🤦‍♂️

    I've been considering moving off Gandi to a different domain registrar. Not anything specific but they stopped offering some services recently and it made me consider alternatives.

    Two days ago Gandi sent out a shady looking alert email asking for all customers to change credit card info.

    Yesterday to today they have an alert on a status page that credit cards cannot be added due to an outage.

    None of this is on their billing information page OR main account dashboard when you login.

    SO BAD.

    com,
    @com@mastodon.social avatar

    @ethanschoonover “In February 2023, Gandi was acquired by Total Webhosting Solutions, forming a new brand, Your.Online. In June, the company announced drastic price increases, including a new monthly fee for mailboxes previously included for free”

    com,
    @com@mastodon.social avatar

    @ethanschoonover I recently evaluated domain registrars and settled on recommending the following four options to my clients.

    Cloudflare

    No markup on ICANN prices, great web UI. Use of their name servers is required.

    Hover

    The public interface to one of the oldest and largest registrars (Tucows, aka OpenSRS, who is a reseller used by many other companies). Higher prices, but solid reputation.
