I like stuff, both new and old. #ActuallyAutistic :autism:, interested in everything, and completely unable to focus on one interest for very long because I’m #TwiceExceptional. Hate is never okay. Pronouns: he/him/his

I’m a #SoftwareEngineer at #GitLab. :linux: :vim: :python: :golang: I’ve been hacking away at keyboards since I was 5 years old.

Okayyyy…. so, now I wish I hadn’t bought this convenience store sandwich. It’s roast beef on a pretzel roll that looked really tasty in the refrigerated case. However, the bottom was very soggy. But that’s not a big deal. I’ve had worse things.

And when I say I’ve had worse things, I’m still referring to this sandwich. I didn’t notice until I’d already bitten and started chewing that the inside is moldy. 🤢 At least I hadn’t swallowed that bite yet.

    @dave @anathema_device Also: men have been wearing and looking damn fine in skirts for centuries if not millennia across many world cultures. The current outrage over it comes from very narrow-minded people whose ideas of “normal” come from an idealized past that never really existed.

    What I want to know is, if you withhold your vote as protest, if Trump wins, how will that help the causes your interested in? He's more likely to give Gaza to Israel on a platter without a blink. He certainly will role back stuff that helps the poor and the immigrant and homeless. And let's not even begin to talk about women's rights or climate change.

    Who will you be punishing?

    deriamis,
    @deriamis@mstdn.social avatar

    @knittingknots2 @mastodonmigration I have friends who are socially liberal but who “protest” the two-party system by refusing to vote. I’ve talked to them several times about it, and their perspective is that they don’t want to play an unfair game because their vote doesn’t really matter anyway. It seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy to me, with an added moral hazard.

    @TechConnectify @mattblaze In some ways, the fact that this place is a different thing to different people is great. It sometimes gives you a new and different perspective with the people you follow.

    On the other hand, humans can be terribly opinionated and take their own ideas far too seriously, and you can end up having a meaningless battle over semantics with someone who isn’t really interested in what you have to say. I tend not to follow those people.

    I’m yet again reminding myself that executive dysfunction is not laziness, nor is depression and anxiety my fault. Yes, I know working out or going for a walk would probably help. Not being able to convince myself to do it is part of the problem.

    @anathema_device At least I’m not back in the dark days when I couldn’t even bring myself to bathe for two weeks. Medication is a very good thing for me. I just wish I had been diagnosed and treated much sooner in life. I never knew how bad it was until I started getting better.

    deriamis,

    @anathema_device I already see exercise as necessary. The problem really isn’t my conception, though - it’s the effort/reward calculation my brain is doing. My mind is seeing it as something “extra” that costs more effort with no obvious and immediate benefit, so it never becomes a priority. The trick I’m going to use is to make exercise something I do along with something I already enjoy - watching educational videos. I’m just fighting the slightly smaller battle to make that happen now.

    I guess the moral of the story here is this: fuck everyone else’s opinions and just be your authentic self because it doesn’t matter anyway.

    I went full-on rant today about the costs of context switching wrt anyone working with technology. The trigger was "even with these more in depth projects, why can't you handle these quick requests?" I did not point out that I already spend more than 20 hours a week in meetings, but that a "5 minute fix" results in at least a 30-45 minute regroup. And all that just tanked the day, again, for me. I barely caught up on Friday's mail as a cooling down activity.

    And this is why I can't fully ditch dairy. I love dairy cheese and yoghurt, and the vegan alternatives are just full of nasties. I can live without dairy or vegan/lowcarb/sugarfree icecream, though. And dairy milk itself.

    @anathema_device Rice cheese is pretty tolerable on a veggie pizza. Vegan ice cream can be good as long as you get the stuff made with just rice or macadamia nut milk (which are delicious on morning cereal) and don’t get hung up on a somewhat icy texture. Vegan yogurt, however, is instantly vomit-inducing. Absolutely not. I’ll take my lactase and be happy.

    deriamis,
    @deriamis@mstdn.social avatar

    @anathema_device I use almond milk sometimes, too - it’s just not quite as good (IMO) for ice cream because of its fairly strong flavor. Oat milk is also good in coffee and cereal, but I didn’t like drinking it.

    There are also some recipes out there for vegan “mozzarella” (which is what I was thinking of when I mentioned rice cheese) that don’t use coconut oil. I don’t often have the time or energy to make it, though, so I haven’t had it in a long time.

    Did you know that wasn't always pink?

    Prior to the 17th century, English people thought of pink as a shade of greenish yellow. It was won by boiling buckthorn berries.

    It was only when carnations became a popular that the idea that pink is a very light shade of , shifted.

    deriamis,
    @deriamis@mstdn.social avatar

    @mythologyandhistory This will now live forever in my mind next to “blue used to be for girls and pink for boys until the 1940s.”

    deriamis,
    @deriamis@mstdn.social avatar

    @mythologyandhistory I did! And I also know the reason pink wasn’t worn by girls is because it was associated with red, which was considered too harsh and aggressive for girls. Blue, on the other hand, was associated with the sky and daylight - and therefore suitably feminine.

    At least, that’s how it was in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It’s flipped several times in the last several centuries, and there have even been times when children’s clothes were gender-neutral!

    @Teri_Kanefield I’m curious about whether Chief of Staff is considered a federal office for the purposes of this statute. I would tend to think not, which means this state only applies to Meadows for any acts that could be in the President’s official capacity. Does that seem correct?
