🚨 bird alert 🚨

Saw my first black-capped vireo today!! 🥳 They are no longer endangered but still vulnerable and very good at hiding in thick shrubs.

PLEASE: can anyone help ID this butterfly?

Similar in size to an oak hairstreak, but pattern looks different to me. Or maybe just within-species variation?

Location: just outside San Antonio, TX

Boosts are appreciated!! 💚

The painted buntings have been back for a little over a week now. I had heard but not yet seen them until today.

Elbow brush (or desert olive) is the first plant to flower here in South Texas and is attracting all the pollinators, including this sparkly green juniper hairstreak.

@CWilbur yes! They are so pretty. I especially like to see the white spots on the underside of their wings that look silver when the light angle is just right 🦋🤩

@CWilbur we see them year round as well here in South Texas. Haven't seen a hairstreak in a while, but I think they are still around. I did see a good variety of other butterflies yesterday: peacock, sleepy orange, variegated fritillary, reakirts blue, and a red admiral. No monarchs, I think those have all migrated south.

@CWilbur oh, very cool! I have only seen a fatal metalmark once, and that was about 4 hours south from here at the National Butterfly Center near the Mexican border. If you ever get the chance to visit, their butterfly festival is a great opportunity to see many special butterflies!

@CWilbur such wonderful diversity! I learn about new butterfly species all the time 😊 Here are two hairstreaks I have seen around the house.

The ring of fire was amazing!!

This was my first full annular and it was spectacular. Can't wait for the total solar eclipse in April 2024.
