Huh, so Unity has reached the killing-the-golden-goose point of their enshittification: https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/unity-to-start-charging-fee-pegged-to-game-installs

20c per install doesn't sound like much to PC users, but that's potentially enough to nuke mobile gaming entirely. Which they know, because they also run the stats system mobile devs use to calculate ARPU/ARPPU.

Unreal taking a small cut of revenue works fine. That's based on you know, money you made.

Unity charging based on "Installs" might actually cost you money in mobile space. Or if you do a PS+ freebie. Or GamePass. Or especially an EpicStore freebie. They know what they're doing, and it's fucking evil.

EDIT: looks like it's a one time fee per install, the "monthly" is just poorly explained, as confirmed in a forums reply from a random employee, naturally

If you have 100 followers or less? Reply to this with a couple of screenshots and a short brief of your game / the game-adjacent thing you're working on, and I'll Boost you to my er like, 5.6k followers.

I'll space things out so I don't spam my folks. Can't promise I'll do every single one. But, we just got a LOT of new folks here from dying-site who need to find their people.

(I'm just copying eniko here, but it's a very good idea and it seems especially relevant right now)

The Internet is at a point where I trust the geocities-ass page that looks like a child made it more than any slickly produced modern web experience.

I crave your shitty blogs. Give me your UNDER CONSTRUCTION gifs.

Love to be the goblin in the SCM thread advocating against git / git-lfs

(it doesn't work in games, sorry, we've got too many binaries and no file locking is hilarious and that's assuming it doesn't just tip over and catch fire on its own)

I just casually used the phrase "bail for zone" and

do the kids even know what that means anymore? 💀

I'm finding ways to enjoy Starfield but

this is gonna get torn apart hahahahahah

Outer Worlds was um, better. It looked better too. This is higher polish, but looks, worse? It's so odd.

Try turning upscaling off for a trip. The game looks WORSE at full res. The FSR2 blurry mess makes their assets look more cohesive than they are, your brain takes it as ground/contact shadow.

Hahahahah. Holy shit.

So Zoom is irrevocably turning their entire network into a training data set: https://hackers.town/@devlogic/110843380784157782

EVERY "public service" company is now attempting to extract value. They're all going for it. They're gonna burn it all down to try and turn AI into a financial exit. Search engines, communication backbones, social networks, everybody.

My read is they're all shit terrified of the impact AI will have and aren't long-term thinkers, so their only short term play is to burn it all down and exit ASAP. Never mind that what they're burning down is, uh, the entirety of our infrastructure. They don't care.

The fuck kind of Christian was my family? Vague memories:

  • church Elders, and a pastor
  • "born again"
  • Thought we were Protestants (when I learned about that in normal school history), but nobody called themselves that? So like an offshoot?
  • Not a mega-church, not associated with other churches
  • Typical first service everyone, second service the kids went downstairs to Sunday School, free cookies and drinks in between
  • The music was the boring kind, not the cool rock-band kind
  • The bread and wine (grape juice) wasn't literal
  • I have vague memories of thinking someday I should go to Israel for a, pilgrimage? I don't know? Why did I think this?
  • Study bibles (King James edition)
  • Baptisms in your teens
  • Wasn't fire and brimstone teaching
  • Weird undertones of racism that I'm still shaking out of my psyche decades later

Did I grow up Evangelical? Is THAT what that fuckery was? Because eyyyyy that sure is the topical one now, fuck.

Am I like, honorary Gen z if I'm listening to skibidi toilet on repeat, or something? Or does that just make me someone with really odd musical tastes?

It's like a glitch take on what made skatman good. Really didn't think anyone would capture that vibe again, but this fucks.

I'm realizing that I've tilted back to basically being a thanks largely to Mastodon and

GOD DAMMIT Y'ALL I'D ESCAPED! I WAS A REGULAR PERSON! NOOOOOoooooo <Dust dev announces sequel> oooooh!

(EDIT: joke-ish, there's no new news about Dust 2, but he's been hinting at it for years, and that I know that really just further confirms the above I guess)

Hold up, Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart is hitting Epic Store later this month? (EDIT: oh AND on Steam too! nice!)

But that was their system-defining exclusive! "you can't possibly do this on any other machine!" and such.

I mean it's nice to no longer need to buy a Playstation but, I did think they'd at least hold some of these back, heh.

Is there an Masto?

Basically I glanced at CD rates, and, is this normal? I don't get why the return rate on 9 months is so high. Or why the yield actually drops on the longer CD terms. Or why the money market account is higher than all but the 9 month CD. Shouldn't the rates just like, go up the longer the term? And shouldn't the money market account be markedly lower than CDs?

Like, is the US economy just in a fucked up place right now, and the banks are going "yup shit's weird" and this is how it looks when they brace for a shakeup? Or something?

Been trying to figure out how to phrase the next era of my / studio

If it's my partner and I making games, but she's a very silent artist partner and wants zero exposure, do I just roll the "single creator" angle?

It feels weird, but also a lot of single creator games sure have lots of contractors so shrug?

Like if I say "couple", EVERYONE gonna zero in on that. The angle they'll want is couple interviews. And, well. No.

I'm starting to think I only like the Final Fantasy games everyone else hates.

FFXV was fantastic, whereas I think I'm ditching FF7 Re around the 13 hour mark.

Honestly there's probably something to that. FF fans are who praise/pick the "good" FF games, so if I'm not one of them, it makes sense I'd like the opposite ones more.

I've seen a lot of articles about how many games are on Steam now, and how this presents a massive visibility challenge, buuuut

How about this view instead?

This excludes the games that have limited profile features. That is, this excludes the games that essentially no one saw/bought.

(it really doesn't take much push to clear the limited profile features)

Folks, if you believe the backpedal, you need to- sit with your feelings a sec, because. Heh.

Nobody deletes a git repo for "low views." don't delete anything unless someone tells them to / they need to, because, why would you? It costs nothing to just leave it there. Unless.

Oh gooood, this whole blowout?

It literally happened because of that shitty Iron Source buy-out that everyone was pissed about. The call to add this fee literally came from the Iron Source side of the business, and it only exists to "kill AppLovin" (a rival ad provider that is better). https://mobilegamer.biz/unity-is-offering-a-runtime-fee-waiver-if-you-switch-to-levelplay-as-it-tries-to-kill-applovin/

I guess being so far behind on Squeenix titles that you haven't even played the first FF7 remake thingy is useful, if you're a PC player?

Looking at the XVI demo footage all "yeah sure, looks about like that other thing I haven't played, neat! I'll play that other thing, and this'll probably be fun in 5 years when it's both on PC and I get to it!"

Don't use real brands in your games/novels

Not because you can't, but because you often can in novels at least— but shouldn't, because you're giving mega corps free advertising.

I mean there's other good reasons too, like "inventing dumb fake brands is half the fun", but that's plenty reason already. Don't lick boots, even if they taste like Oreo.

I'm finally coming out of the far end of feeling... actually angry at the game. I obsessively played it for 3 weeks, but half that time was spent yelling at it, yet I kept playing it, aaaand

that implies it kept me hooked with dark patterns. And that kinda, doesn't feel great, especially in a Zelda, especially especially after BOTW.

Best guess, I let my guard down (because of BOTW), and didn't rebound off all the Ubisoft-ish dark pattern shit they stuffed into this one as a result. Which is. Very. Ewwww.

Ok, FF7 Remake. Just got to aerith, rooftops.

I've been hating this game more and more for the last few hours.

Does it just keep getting worse? The dialog is increasingly annoying, and they keep shoving me in mazes that look like the junior designer sneezed pieces at random, because they gotta pad for all this increasingly shit dialog.

I just. What the hell. Did they only let the A team work on the opening hours?

If anyone was considering Kagi (premium search engine) but was put off the limits on number of searches, they dropped that entirely for most- the $10 tier is now just unlimited searches.

$10/mo for "a Google that actually works" is very worth it to me, though your mileage may vary.

Do you (a developer), when starting on a new feature, have a time box that magically scales to at least half a day, wherein you just stare at it while going "hmmm" before you even start?

Allegedly to plan, but as if by magic, you figure it all out right at the end of the slot of time (right before lunch / before going home)? Yet your brain does NOT let you skip this sacred staring-at-codebase time to the last 30 seconds of "let's just start here"?
