Oh dear lord is it actually still Monday? I had so many good conversations today with old friends and collaborators, and yelled about satellites to a room full of astronomers to try to encourage them to take action, and didn't completely melt down in a big city.

Almost have a public website ready to go with more satellite regulation advocacy info, hopefully will get it (at least bare bones version) before my public talk tomorrow!!

Mundane observation about Toronto: SO much falafel.

As I'm unable to Quote Post this, I'll just say here that this article is worth reading.

If you're a little put out that you missed the aurora display on Saturday, it's worth noting that "Exact timing and strength of [aurora] is hard to predict, but their frequency follows the eleven-year cycle of solar activity... As we head into the period of solar maximum predicted for the next year or so, such events should be common."

An incomplete list of inappropriate comments I received from my male colleagues recently:

  • You look furious.
  • You have a quiet voice. A woman from Ukraine in our department also has a quiet voice.
  • You look nervous.
  • You gave me an angry look at the elevator and I didn't dare to discuss a project with you.
  • You are so modest.
  • You don't have to get so confrontational.

They reduce our professional interactions to an imaginary emotional state of mine.

I really don't understand but it makes my blood boil.

For a bit of Sunday happiness & silliness: tell me about some a book you've recently excitedly told someone about and why!

I've talked about Erin Meyer's "Culture Map" because it opened my eye to a lot of intercultural interactions I have in both, my everyday and my work life.

And about Marcin Wicha's "Things I Didn't Throw Out" because it made me laugh and cry at the same time + made me fall in love with Daunt books because I would not have found out about the book without them.

I recently told my family and friends about The Warrior Queen by Joanna Arman.
It's about one of the queens (I'm not pro royalist by any means) of this land, pre-England, and how she had the guts to take over after her husband died, even in the face of "women can't rule!". Little is known about her and she was almost written out of history.

I like my photos, but feel a bit of a fraud posting them. I saw only faint grey wisps of mist; it was my 's that imbued that mist with colour and shape.
Is it deceptive to distort reality with these photos?
Or (at least on occasion) are phone cameras marvelous tools, like telescopes, macro lenses, or infrared filters, which can actually show us new ways of seeing?

In the most glorious "fuck you" I have seen in a while, you know the book that Cumberland City Council banned because they're homophobic bigots - Holly Duhig's "A focus on Same Sex Parents"? Well, the publisher, BookLife Publishing, have made a PDF version of the book available for free.

The Eta Aquarids meteor shower, although it peaked on the 6th May, is still happening and will continue until 28th May (associated with Comet Halley). Could've been that.

'Scavengers Reign' is one of the best shows I've ever seen. HBO –oops, sorry, 'Max'– killing it is so dumb. I don't trust much more in this sense, but if the show can have a second life there then so be it. While season 1 was pretty self-contained, I really want to keep exploring this fascinating world.

I tried taking a couple of photos but my phone camera is rubbish 🤦‍♀️ Didn't have my other camera on me 🙄

It was stunning though, even just with eyes. Light greenish, white-ish streaks, waves and curls emanating outwards, directly above us. I'm so happy I got to see it.

On a fait avec les moyens du bord (= Belore qui gambade en pyjama dans les hautes herbes tout en dépliant son trépied dans le noir), mais je suis content du résultat.
En fait je suis surtout content d'avoir vu ça pour la première fois.

Avec une vue un peu plus dégagée, l'aurore est très nette, avec des traits fins comme un voile pourpre entre deux lueurs vertes.
Photo au format carré prise à la verticale, entre les cimes d'arbres le ciel étoilé est teinté de rose, et des lignes plus claires semblent converger vers le centre de l'image.
Toujours à la verticale, photo au format classique du ciel teinté avec des variations de violet et de vert.
