Exploring probabilistic estimation and Monte Carlo simulation for Scrum, and I can't shake the feeling that practitioners tend to simplify variation in throughput as being a static variable over time. But throughput, ability to refine, work item size, confidence, work item composition, solution/codebase viscosity and team composition all change over time. Accounting for all that means your throughput sample sizes shouldn't span too long a period of time.

Would it ever make sense to have a team composed of 75% or even 100% external consultants/contractors on a modernization initiative?

Sometimes I do agree/advocate for this approach.

Mostly, I see it as a pattern for validating an approach and showing what is possible.

Ideally, it should be a short-term stepping stone to building in-house capability.

kerfuffle,
@kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

@nick_tune I think it makes sense if you consider "what got you here won't get you there".

The challenge is ensuring it doesn't start, run and die in isolation without the learnings ever flowing back into the rest of the organisation. If it's a bunch of external people, the rest of the organisation may find it easier to just ignore them and their initiative than if it's done by (some of) their own.

I'm seeing more and more updates by companies adding some form of AI to their services, but I'm not seeing half as much news regarding solutions to the unauthorized use of training data.

Who has good news sources on

  • Companies like Midjourney taking measures to avoid training their models on others' art without permission.
  • Companies like Microsoft taking measures to avoid training their copilot on others' code without permission.
  • Glaze
  • AI user-agent blocking through robots.txt

kerfuffle,
@kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

@bestiaexmachina I hadn't heard of the Nightshade extension of the AI model poisoning tool Glaze. Interesting!

kerfuffle,
@kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

@bestiaexmachina Interestingly, data poisoning and model poisoning is also a security concern: if someone can figure out how these AI code assistance tools are trained, it is possible to feed them code that acts as "sleeper agents", able to intentionally render vulnerable code or otherwise trick the AI to learn the wrong thing.

kerfuffle,
@kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

@bestiaexmachina Imho I don't think AI is overhyped the way blockchain, cryptocurrency and web3 is.

The prior has many obvious usecases, but struggles with concerns around ownership and security, whereas the latter is mostly smoke and mirrors to pretend there are any usescases that uniquely benefit from it, other than ponzi schemes, rugpulls, laundering and other grifts.

ActivityPub is so neat! With all the new implementations coming out, it's slowly becoming my "one stop shop" internet aggregator.

For example, all from within my Mastodon instance I can:

Follow communities on Lemmy and Kbin, allowing me to interact with every post/comment and make my own post or comment to any community.

Follow my favorite podcasts and get new episodes directly in my feed via PodcastIndex.org

Follow WordPress blogs that have the ActivityPub plugin activated.

SOON enough I'll be able to:

Interact/follow accounts on Threads (and hopefully someday Instagram)

Follow/interact with comments/posts/communities from NodeBB forums.

This protocol is changing the internet and how I use it every day.

PS. If you want more information on how to do any of these things, just let me know and I will explain. Though please limit to asking about one or two at a time, as some are quite intricate in their implementations.

Edit: Nitter has been shut down 2 days after I posted this. Oh well. Fuck Xhitter

Some time ago I was the new kid in a meeting with various teams who were about to conclude their talks, having agreed on integrating using an existing product identifier.

To verify, I asked what exactly that was for everyone:

  • product_uid
  • base_sku
  • variant_sku
  • ean
  • name

These were not the same. Turns out folks had implicitly made the translation to their own domain language.

Don't assume you're talking about the same thing just because it has a similar name.

kerfuffle,
@kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

@Dave_von_S Yeah. I've seen similar situations with multiple teams talking about a "customer".

A financial department suddenly needed to enter a customer's email address and gender into their UI, which they didn't have because it was irrelevant to their domain, but the customer support domain needed it, and why not lump all those properties together in one big cosy object, with one big set of constraints, in one database table, as a customer is a customer, right? ^^

kerfuffle,
@kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

@supernov I've noticed quite a few people make accounts on more than one server, and gradually, as they settle into a particular one, let the rest go quiet without informing followers.

If you can't put together a decent low-threshold, actual, honest and carefully curated FAQ on your website, chances are that the best any chatbot you offer your customers can do is piss them off.

kerfuffle, to ai
@kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

Unless the chat option on your website is either manned by a well-trained human customer support employee or an AI capable of producing a better experience than a MUD in the 90s, don't bother with adding it to your website.

Just add a phone number, email address, contact form and/or properly curated FAQ page.

This is my last ever story on Substack, for reasons that will become obvious when you read the post. The site is a giant garbage fire.

Please read and share widely: despite the attention rightly given to Substack's Nazi problem, the fascists are just the tip of a terrible iceberg, and I think it's important that people know about it.
