god i hate the words "asset flip"

10 years ago it very specifically meant using premade game engine assets, often whole example games, to slap something vaguely playable on steam to trick people into buying it and attract steam card hunters

now people call anything that reuses assets from a previous game an asset flip, or even use it for any art in a game they consider to look "generic"

its terrible i wish people would stop it

lulolwen,

@eniko ...when did this drift? I still use it for the former.

anyone know any remedies for input lag (both keyboard and gamepad) on games, specifically SDL games, on windows?

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko From the programming side, or user side?

From the user side, the sky is unfortunately the limit- I've seen out of date graphics drivers seemingly cause input lag, bad devices on the same USB host, the works. My favorite was discovering someone who had input lag issues due to USB selective suspend being mysteriously automatically re-enabled in the current Windows power profile.

dang why can't i find anything good to watch on youtube lately :/

I feel like its recommendations have gotten way worse, at least for me

@eniko How do you feel about 2 to 3 hour luthier videos, because man the gentle sound of woodworking is super relaxing to me

we live in a world of e-waste and related refuse, from batteries to electronics to fluorescent lights, and yet no where, afaict, has incorporated e-waste pickup into their waste management processes, nor are there widespread e-waste dropoff points

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@beka_valentine Best Buy's recycling program has actually been invaluable for me while ewasteSF has been remodeling. They used to even give out discounts, although it seems like they don't give you discounts on hard drives when you recycle anymore.

There's some C code in the wikipedia page for "Hilbert Curve" and I would like to propose this code be removed from the "Hilbert Curve" page and moved to the "How Not to Comment Source Code" page

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc My current winner for how not to comment your code, in that it is totally uncommented: https://github.com/vapoursynth/vapoursynth/blob/0cc450efc4767145feed5bb2f8c507b16d71d8f0/src/filters/vivtc/vivtc.c#L93

I spent literally 4 hours trying to write comments for it and eventually gave up after figuring out that the implementation has likely been broken since it was written... but since there's no comments, I have no idea what the intent even was.

dan harmons comments on how hollywood does this to people are important because, and i cant stress this enough:

COMPUTER SECURITY, DEV, AND ENGINEERING JOBS DO EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

we're not alone.
so, pay attention.

@Viss "They find you, two-time you / Say you're the best they've ever seen" isn't isolated to Hollywood, either.

I need a hacked/hackable Nintendo Switch, for the obvious reasons...

I need to explore why Wheel of Fortune (2017, Switch) has an image from an incest anime in it, and I can't figure it out in an emulator

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@foone I really feel like the explanation is as simple as "a dev needed to test image ingestion and this was the most recent image in their downloads folder".

Why do so many people think that mastodon hates jokes? >_> I make lots of jokes. Some of them are even good, and get a lot of boosts. Nobody's gotten upset about jokes at me literally ever

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko "Everyone on [arbitrary social media] hates my jokes!" has the same energy as that "I have been censored for my views, oh, you know the ones" meme. People telling on themselves real hard.

Do Bethesda style open world games really even need a main plot and an ending of sorts? I gotta admit, even though I've played Oblivion, Skyrim, and more times than I can even count Morrowind, I've only finished a main quest in any of them once, and it was in Morrowind with a character so fully tricked out that it was trivial to stomp through the main quest to finally see what all the fuss with Dagoth Ur was about

Like. Would it actually detract from the experience at all if they just said "hey, here's a cool sandbox full of quests and places to explore, go nuts" and there wasn't a main quest?

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko Do the per-town/guild quests in Skyrim count as "main" quests? At least some of them are arguably more interesting than dealing with Alduin.

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko I think I'd argue yeah, if faction quests aren't main, they do benefit from an MQ then. It's less that a MQ itself is interesting and more that it serves as a "default" objective that encourages the player to move to a more richly-detailed area that they maybe haven't explored if they don't have something that's more interesting to them. Particularly if it's someone's first video game where they might even be struggling with basic movement, they might just be overwhelmed with choice.

foone, to random

the best thing about ghidra is that no matter which version you're using, setting equates sometimes just doesn't work, but if you google it, you only find several bug reports which basically say "equates don't work" and then it's "closed, fixed in X.Y.Z" and that's a version you're upgraded way past

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@foone Devil's advocate: It might have been macros generating new functions?

eniko, to random
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

What does the setting to be discoverable on mastodon even actually do? I don't want people to be able to full text search my posts (because it's mostly spammers and harassment) so since they're putting both things on a single option I'll have to figure out if account discoverability is something worth getting harassed and spammed for, which is hard when I don't know what it actually does

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko While I agree in this case it's on-balance worse, assuming that the features or experience for existing users should never be degraded in favor of wider user appeal borders on obligatory xkcd https://xkcd.com/1172/ .

eniko, to random
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

Who are these people that supposedly prefer to rent? The only good thing about renting is that, in theory, if something breaks its someone else's problem to get it fixed. But in practice what happens is that you now have an obnoxious middle man in between you and getting the problem fixed and they can just decide fixing it isn't one of their priorities and you just get to deal with shit being broken

So who. Who actually enjoys renting when they intend to stay somewhere long term? Feel like this is just some bullshit landlords came up with to justify why renting is okay and people fell for their propaganda

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko Devil's advocate / American Moment: in dense housing (like a large/multi-story apartment building), I'd rather rent than own a condo unit or something. It seems like getting all condo owners in a building to agree to fund maintenance on buildings is often impossible and results in no maintenance being funded (even critical structural maintenance), instead of the bare-minimum that rental units receive. I'd rather the building I'm in not collapse.

Still sucks all around though.

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko I guess? I guess it comes down to "prefer" vs "enjoy"- I prefer the option where the building doesn't collapse, but I definitely don't enjoy any of them.

eniko, to gamedev
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

Working on games is cool cause they're antithetical to clean code. I'm sure some people will argue but clean code relies on systems that obey a set of distinct rules. Those rules are almost always absolute

So you start your game with your clean rules. In context A you can do B but not C

But an unfortunate part of game design is that the most interesting powers you can give players are the ones that break the inherent rules of the system. So inevitably you'll wind up with a bunch of code that works around your baseline rules and that always turns into a goddamn mess

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko After reading https://github.com/id-Software/DOOM/blob/master/linuxdoom-1.10/p_map.c#L686-L695 I honestly started feeling "permission" to just write terrible code as long as it works. Character controllers aren't any more legible 30 years later, and at this point I'm not really convinced they can be.

Why did we ever think it acceptable for giant immoral corporations to decide what we see and what we get to interact with? Why did we let their algorithms control the narrative, for profit, and tell so many people what to think?

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko While I would prefer less reliance on services provided by megacorps, I definitely don't want to personally moderate an independent service even if the service required no technical maintenance and was zero-finanical-cost. (And any hosted service, independent or otherwise, is moderated by definition.)

I suspect the preference to pursue things other than moderation labor extends to most other people as well. Remove human moderators and you get an algorithm, for profit or otherwise.

Me: making home made sausage, borscht, soups, gourmet meat, ice cream, milkshakes, fancy coffee drinks, Mexican food

Also me: yeah but can I really say I do a lot of cooking though?

lulolwen,
@lulolwen@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko That's literally just good strategy for home cooking though. Even before electricity, home cooking was all about stuff you could make quick like fried eggs, stuff that used leftovers from main dishes like hushpuppies, or stuff that could slow-cook like Dutch ovens so you could do something else.

As long as it's tasty, you're cooking.
