A fleet of airplanes has been found to have a potential electrical flaw near a fuel tank that aviation regulators fear could cause an explosion.

Boeing 777 liners are at risk of “electrostatic discharge” near its center-wing fuel tank, which could possibly cause it to catch fire and explode, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

@yogthos Long before I even considered myself any flavor of anticapitalist, I was made nervous about flying by the knowledge that, once a market was effectively captured, maximizing profit margins meant creating the crappiest version of a product people could bear to use. Seeing all this finally proven true has been vindicating in a way that makes me anxious about the other shit I suspect is coming down the pipe.

The neat thing about sodium ion cells, aside from being environmentally-friendly enough that they could actually propel us into the sort of battery-heavy future our current dependence on lithium forefends, is that they are really good at dealing with abuse. E.g., they can be completely discharged without losing capacity and they can be overcharged without bursting into flames (or even being significantly damaged, depending on how overcharged).

I believe in the value of files, but I'm not convinced that folders are the best way to organize them.

Files (in open-standard formats) are our most powerful weapon against walled gardens! If you can take your things effortlessly from app to app! Allowing you to switch apps at a whim or combine multiple apps together.

There can be great business risk in not recognizing how mission-critical your files are. How you want them to outlast any particular service or software.

Ooooo, idea!

@kitt @alcinnz Maybe one might use a custom FUSE layer to keep metadata synced with a database?

@kitt @alcinnz Yeah, that's a design I considered for my project at http://tilde.town/~lykso, but I'd read somewhere that inotify doesn't do well watching large trees, as you suspected.

I just want to write some code, maybe make some music, maybe draw some pictures.

I don't want to be mad about blockchains, I don't want to be mad about GenAI, I don't want to be mad about terrible backfiring "think of the children" legislation, I don't want to be terrified about the rising tide of bigoted, racist fascism ending democracy in my lifetime.

I don't want you to have to be mad about all that either.

I wish the world would leave us all alone for a little bit.

@glyph In between my toddler's wake cycles, I wrote some new music for the first time in over ten years. EP is here: https://mirlo.space/mumbleandsigh/release/five-tracks-makes-an-ep

(Mirlo is not my project, but it's pretty cool anyway. It's a Bandcamp alternative structured as a cooperative!)

I've also been learning some in order to repair my work. Here's what I've got so far of my first attempt:

    breadandcircuses, (edited ) to Canada

    The annual wildfire season in Canada is coming to an end. Or, anyway, it should be by now.

    But 2023 is unlike any other year. As of yesterday, there were more than 900 fires still burning, over half of them out of control.

    Look at the area burned in the second graph below. The damage to wildlife is literally incalculable. Greenhouse gas emissions from all of these fires is off the charts.

    Sure, some reply guy will tell you that forest fires are normal and natural and necessary. But not like this. What we’re seeing this year is an unnatural catastrophe caused by human industry — by the oil companies, their financiers, and the governments that support and subsidize them.

    It’s a crime. It’s ecocide. And you know what? To them, it’s just Business As Usual.

    Chatting with @mhoye this morning I was reminded of the idea that "The Architecture of Open Source Applications" (https://aosabook.org/) should have had another volume called "The Architecture of Open Source Organizations" in which people who'd been with various orgs (but were no longer there, so were less constrained in what they could say) talked about how specific OSS groups had come to have their current shape and what they'd done well and poorly along the way. 1/

    Why is everyone OK with credentials being stored in well-known files like ~/.netrc or ~/.config/hub ? Any code I run on my machine has access to them: convenient but also dangerous! Is there something I'm missing that's keeping malware from using or exfiltrating them?

    lykso,
    @lykso@tiny.tilde.website avatar

    @nedbat Yeah, this also bothers me. I tend to use utilities which allow me to supply a command for retrieving credentials instead, like mbsync's PassCmd config option or the passwordeval option in msmtprc, allowing me to hack together things like the system I describe at gemini://lyk.so/systems/e-mail/

    esther, to random

    “ActivityPub is an open technology so it’s fine if Facebook uses it” is a nonsensical take.

    “Houses” are also an open technology but it’s very much not ok how landlords and other capitalists use it.

    If you believe open standards and open source alone will protect you from the destructive force of capital, then you’re in for a harsh awakening. Or you could listen to all the people who have been harmed by or studied these mechanisms in the past already and learn something before it’s too late.

    lykso,
    @lykso@tiny.tilde.website avatar

    @tinker @r000t @esther It's weird to me now that it doesn't seem apparent to ~everyone that this way of engaging with open standards is just the dominant strategy in the game theory of capitalism. The goal is always going to be "enclose that shit and extract rent." Embracing open standards is never going to be the first choice, and it will never be a choice that sticks.
