So, over in the astronomy world there is some consternation about a tweet from eminent satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell.

Apparently "Starlink Precipitation" is now a thing. And yes, you got that right, Starlink precipitation is pieces of Elon Musk's fucking internet satellites raining down from space.

I sympathize with Judge Merchan, who I believe has refrained from jailing Trump to avoid allowing Trump to play the victim and raise money off of that. I also think Merchan probably doesn’t want to interrupt the trial for hearings over whether Trump is causing his sycophantic Republican electeds to say things that violate the gag order. But …. 1/ #LawFedi

Would think that the judge's concern has got to be for the intimidating impact on the jury.

Elon Musk is a total waste of money.

Tesla is going all out to push Elon Musk's $55 billion pay package through — even spending money on ads https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-spends-money-advertising-elon-musk-pay-package-shareholder-vote-2024-5

How stupid are TSLA shareholders? If they pass this package, the stock will crater. It's voting to cut your share value in half because... Elon.

We have words for this impending orange menace. Fascism, autocracy, kleptocracy, oligarchy, dictatorship.

We do not want to live under such a regime. The threat is very real. People need to wake the fuck up to it.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@trainman @TonyStark

Whatever those reasons are, they pale in comparison to loosing our liberty to a gang of criminals. Over America's history countless lives have been lost fighting for freedom from such despots both foreign and domestic. Now it's our turn to take up the challenge to preserve democracy for generations to come.

Really disappointed in Biden today. Believe given climate crisis we should be doing everything we can, including buying inexpensive EVs from China, to hasten the transition from carbon based fuels.

That said, certainly international relations are complex and we don't have all the information or know all the constraints he is wrestling with.

In any case, would never threaten to withhold electoral support. These issues pale measured against a Trump win and the incumbent end of democracy.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@Lassielmr

There is a huge world of difference between Trump and Biden. Appreciate that Biden may not be the progressive we want him to be, but he is not a fascist hell bent on destroying democracy. There is no comparison.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@bobthomson70 @Lassielmr

Indeed. Biden is no progressive, but neither is he a fascist. His policies are frustrating to many on the left, but he is not an existential threat to worldwide liberal democratic order. Equating these two is very dangerous as it minimizes the threat we all are facing from resurgent right wing autocracy across the globe.

Perspective is needed now. If Biden gets elected we can continue to deliberate our future. If Trump is elected the future is lost.

Will Trump be criminally convicted in his election interference trial? If so, will it affect the election?

mastodonmigration, (edited )
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@rbreich

Maybe not, and therein lies the real tragedy of Donald Trump. He has so debased our society; glorifying lying, cheating, thuggery and stealing, that a felony conviction may be perceived by his supporters as a net positive.

The psychic damage he has wrought is profound. We are seeing the breakdown of civil citizenship as large segments of the population emulate his wretched conduct. Not sure how the nation recovers.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@darwinwoodka @rbreich

You are probably right. Yet, that's what civil society does. It keeps a lid on the rot. People operating lawfully and respectfully isolate and contain those who would upset civilized order. What Trump does is provide these folks with a hero that gives them the permission to act up. He's the Pied Piper of miscreant behavior.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@Dervishpi @rbreich

Fair enough. Feel like we are in Act 2 of a high school musical where the bullies and rich kids are taking over the school. Just hoping for an Act 3 where the nerds, stoners and a few of the jocks team up and rally the entire student body to send them packing.

New gag order violation? How does the judge deal with all this? Trump keeps finding new ways to break the law and rope others into breaking the law for him.

"New York Magazine's Andrew Rice, appearing on MSNBC's "Alex Wagner Tonight," said he spotted Trump rewriting and editing lines that would be spoken by the handful of notable guests who made the pilgrimage to the court, where he's on trial for falsifying business records."

Donald Trump - candidate for the Republican party despite having:

-sent an armed mob to stop the election certification
-told an insurrectionist mob to go to our Capitol and fight like hell
-tried to steal an election
-received millions of dollars from foreign nations while serving as President
-been found to be a sexual predator by a jury
-been found to be a fraud by a judge
-had multiple affairs that he covered up through hush money payments
-did tax fraud
-stolen national security secrets which he hid and concealed, enlisted others to help his Espionage crimes
-promised a healthcare plan in two weeks, never delivered, but did deliver an empty binder to 60 minutes
-pretended a pandemic wasn't serious causing hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths
-said he wants to be a dictator
-told our enemy to go ahead and attack our allies
-sent jobs to china
-praises murderous dictators
-told 33,000 lies in office

And all of this is but a fraction of his crimes, scandals and despicable moments.

mastodonmigration, (edited ) to random
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

Probably the most important documentary evidence of the crime in the Trump election fraud case is this Michael Cohen bank statement showing an amount Weisselberg wrote on the document of $420,000 — the $130,000 plus $50,000 repayments grossed up to $360,000 to account for taxes and a $60,000 bonus.

The fraud is revealed by "grossing it up" since this demonstrates the payments are being represented as income when in fact they are a repayment of the hush money Cohen gave Stormy Daniels.

Play-by-play Trump trial coverage, with so-called analysis of whether the prosecution or the defense has "scored points" -- the staple of Big Journalism right now -- is the equivalent of horse-race political coverage.

All it takes are stenographic skills and the ability to make confident-sounding guesses. It's clickbait and ratings bait, and it does nothing good for public understanding.

What is really not okay is injecting disinformation like this:

mastodonmigration, (edited )

Perhaps the most important piece of such evidence is Cohen's bank statement with Weisselberg's handwriting breaking down the repayment scheme. "Grossed up" for taxes:

I said no sorry,, just mute me.

I don't understand CWing political posts. And that doesn't mean you need to @ me explaining why. I know THEIR reasons, I just disagree with them and won't do it.

I respect CWs for other things, but not politics. Politics is news and people need to be aware of what's happening. It's not gory or violent, it's politics.

These types of comments were very common back during the big Twitter migration in late 2022 early 2023, and had a very chilling effect on new people's enthusiasm for Mastodon. Over time a sort of consensus has emerged that there are no hard and fast rules about how someone should use Mastodon other than those spelled out in your instances privacy policy, and that these tools are available to you, but not by any means required.
