@ai6yr LOL This Swedish person agrees with the sentiment. Most Swedish people slather it with homemade mustard to avoid actually tasting it.

Although it's still better than surströmming.

@ai6yr @dogfox No meatballs for you then, Ben. 😂

Seriously, if you want to try something exotic that's actually good, take a look at the pickled herring at Ikea. Regular pickled herring or mustard herring are genuinely great on a sandwich.

It’s a cool day today AND my baking stuff is unpacked (I think), so today I’m making scones! It’s my family’s recipe, and is miles better than the dry, brittle stuff the coffee shops sell. 😃 Recipe Incoming

Shout out to every designer and developer who've ever had a client become severely distressed over Lorem Ipsum text.

Total solidarity with anyone who've had the same person freak out twice.

@sysop408 LOL How do you even find these people? I prefer to do my user testing with people outside the Bay Area, because people here are very online compared to the rest of the US. I guess your clients are the exceptions that prove the rule. 😂

Hail Freya, it's Friday!
For this week’s I'm reviving an age-old pagan debate.
This is a two-part question:

Do you think cursing/hexing is an acceptable practice?

Have you done it?

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@Cat_LeFey I think outright cursing can be warranted in some cases, but I've never done it. Even when warranted, I didn't want to be entangled in the cursee's energy or fate.

OTOH reflecting back a person's energy toward themselves can be very effective. As long as the recipient is a non-psychotic adult, in my book reflecting back is ethically neutral. In my experience it's best combined with a banishing. They usually stay gone after that.

mrundkvist, to Archaeology
@mrundkvist@archaeo.social avatar

Back when was the fashionable buzz word, I repeatedly had to explain to enthusiasts that archaeological data are not just Big, they are Confused and Patchy and Hairy.

I can't really see how the current generative algorithms could make me obsolete or even speed up much of the work I do. Because I'm in this really niche activity with no commercial potential that demands constant engagement with wildly non-standardised data as well as creative writing about them.

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@mrundkvist AI could help you write about the data. It's great at summarizing stuff. E.g. on the US Amazon site, AI provides a summary of the reviews at the top. When I've checked, the summaries have usually been pretty accurate.

Train it on your collected writing up to this point, then give it data on your latest excavations and tell it to write something similar. Then you become the editor, rather than the author.

Exhibit 921 of what it's like to work with . I asked some people for their logos converted into one color images for screen printing purposes. I also offered to do the conversion for anyone who couldn’t do it themselves.

I just got a logo back that looked like someone printed it out and then meticulously colored it in using a black fine point felt tip pen… an impressive effort to be sure.

The absurd and difficult parts of working with small businesses is also what I love about it. You'll never be bored and if you thought you've seen it all, just wait a minute.

Having watched Safiya Nygaard tuft a rug, I too want to try it.

There's a place in San Jose that offers rug tufting workshops. They start at $100 though. That's perfectly reasonable for a 4-hour experience, but more than I'm comfortable spending right now.

ai6yr, to gardening

GREAT opportunity for those in the Conejo Valley/Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park. There is an opportunity for $250 in FREE PLANTS (plus help) to convert your yard into a native garden from the local Audubon society. https://wp.conejovalleyaudubon.org/conservation/lawns-to-habitat/

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@ai6yr They probably expect you to kill 1/3 or more of the plants. That may well be realistic for people who don't install automatic irrigation.

I know people who spend an hour every evening hose watering their garden. Then they go on holiday and come back to dead plants. Big surprise! 🤦🏼‍♀️

When I tell them that they should install irrigation, they act like I'm inviting them to my Satanist church. 😂 Year, after year...

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@ai6yr With an established native garden you don't need it. But realistically it's going to take most people at least 3-5 years to get to that stage. If they lose lots of plants every time they take a vacation, it takes even longer. Automatic systems save time, money and heartache.

@ai6yr @Catawu I knew a guy in San Jose who in the 90s suddenly faced water bills of several hundred dollars.

Stopped by a different Costco today, and while I was there I got 3 lavender plants for $13. They didn't have any sweet elysium, but lavender will do just fine.
-the Costco closest to my house doesn't water their plants so if you don't buy them as soon as they're in, they get all wilted

@samhainnight That's a great price for lavender!
